Control the light, provide privacy for your living space, and add beauty with window blinds. Follow our easy steps and get tips on how to measure for outside-mount blinds.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

  1. An "outside-mount blind" is a good choice if your window opening has no recess or if the window is out of "square." An outside-mount can be adjusted for irregular sizes.
  2. Determine how wide you want the blind, allowing for the mounting brackets. Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. You can have a blind wider than the window and casing, but don't extend too far over the sides, as it will look strange when the blinds are open. You don't want to see too much wall under the slats of the blind.
  3. Measure for the height of the blind, allowing for the mounting bracket above the window opening and for the bottom of the blind to go beyond the bottom of the window sill and apron. Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch.
  4. As a rule, the blind will look nice if it extends about 3 inches beyond each side of the window. So a 42" window would use a 48" blind, allowing 3" on each side. If the window is 65" wide, you'd order the blind 71", again allowing for 3" on each side.

  1. When writing the measurement, list the width first, then the height. The proper measurement would be "width X height."
  2. When measuring for an outside-mount blind, be sure to add extra height and width for the mounting hardware and any extra overhang desired.
  3. If you are not sure about how to make accurate measurements, you'll want to pay to have someone from the blind company come to your home to measure.
  4. If you provide your own measurements, you'll be responsible if the blinds do not fit. Blinds are custom items and must be perfect to look right.
