The table is often the showpiece of parties and family get-togethers, and the starting point of any table setting is the linens. So before you go out and buy a bunch of tablecloths, placemats and napkins check out these table linen do's and don'ts.

  • DO stock up on the basics like neutral or white linen tablecloths and napkins.
  • DON'T be stingy when it comes to size. A large napkin is always in style. 21" is a generous and stylish size.
  • DO keep a variety of linens on hand. Have an assortment of dinner (18"-22"), luncheon (10"-14") and cocktail (5"-10") napkins ready in case you have to unexpectedly entertain.
  • DO choose casually elegant basics. A hemstitch border adds just the right amount of detail and works as well for formal events as it does for casual.
  • DON'T be afraid to use vintage linens. Your grandmother's heirloom linens aren't doing any good hidden away in a drawer.
  • DO choose natural linen. It's long lasting, natural and bio-degradable. It's also absorbent and eco-friendly.
  • DON'T forget to build on your basics. Once you've got a good collection of neutrals you can start to branch out. Mix and match them with colorful, patterned table linens. Layer a patterned napkin on neutral placemat for example.
  • DO dress up plain linens with fun accessories like embellished napkin rings.
  • DON'T forget to iron linens if they're wrinkled. Wrinkled table lines make for a sloppy looking table.
  • DO embellish plain napkins with ribbon. Use double sided tape to attach a ribbon border to placemats then simply peel it off before washing.
