Decorating a room doesn't have to follow every decorating rule. Add something to every room you decorate that is special and doesn't quite fit.
A quirky touch can be anything from a frame of high school letters and athletic pins in your organized dressing room to a paper mache balloon in the corner of a powder room. These touches can be something that has special meaning, is a special memento, or a personal and memorable item.
How about an interesting decoration from a foreign trip? I have a piece of slate from a trip to Wales in my kitchen, a doll from France in a guest room, and a glass seashell from Hawaii among other things on a bookshelf. Each item requires a bit of explanation, which of course, brings up happy memories of travels.
By putting these items, and more, around my home, every corner has something uniquely personal, perhaps out of place, and a conversation starter.
