What Not to Bring for a Housewarming Gift

House Gift "No-Nos"

From About.com

When someone has a new home, it's nice to bring a gift on your first visit. Or if you've been invited to share a meal or special occasion, a simple hostess (or host) "thank you" gift is in order. Wondering if something is right or wrong?

Let's talk about what NOT TO BRING, what to avoid at all costs, no matter what the temptation.

  • Do not recycle things you've received from someone else!
This is a real "no-no!" You're bound to be found out sooner or later.

  • Don't bring any plants but the freshest.
Many people don't do well with plants. Start out with something new and fresh, and it may actually last for a while.

  • Don't take something that you'd love but your friend wouldn't.
Think about why you're taking a gift and choose something that you know they would love and use. You might even see if they have registered for gifts at a store. You know they either need or want those items.

  • Never offer a live pet.
Think of how much work a new pet would take. Chances are, if your friends wanted a pet, they'd already have one.

  • Be careful if you take food.
If you're known for making something special and delicious, great. But think about the lifestyle and allergies of the recipient. Don't take something modern if they love antiques. Don't take alcohol if you know they don't drink. Don't take yummy dessert if they're on a diet. You get the picture.

Now, get some ideas for wonderful hostess gifts that are appropriate any time of the year, for any occasion. You'll get lots of "thanks!"
