Installation Requirements for Lighting

Plugs or Hard-Wired

From About.com

Tip #5: What Type of Installation

Be aware that some types of light fixtures may have special installation requirements. If, for example, you are buying bookshelf lighting or track lighting, you may prefer (or require) that the fixtures be either hard-wired into a wall or have a plug so you can plug them into a regular wall outlet. Halogen fixtures may include a transformer that must be installed into a ceiling or wall.

How to Decide on a Light Fixture:

If you are remodeling or building a home, hard-wired fixtures are a great way to eliminate visible wiring. You’ll also be able to control the fixtures using a regular wall switch. For apartment dwellers or in an older home, you may need to go with fixtures that plug in. Still not sure? Ask advice from the lighting vendor, an electrician, or competent handyman.
