Use a Chest of Drawers in Every Living Space

Mahogany Highboy

When we think of a chest of drawers, we think of all the ways it can be used and all the things that can go in the drawers.
  • In the Bedroom

    • Chests of drawers were originally made to store clothes and a bedroom is the logical place to find one. Small clothing, not appropriate for hanging, find a handy home in a chest of drawers. Folded sweaters, socks, underwear, t-shirts, and socks are right at home.

    • A specific tall narrow chest, called a lingerie chest, was designed for a small space to hold small pieces of clothing, such as lingerie and socks.

    • A short, low chest with 2 drawers works well for a bedside table. The drawers can hold the book you're reading, lotions, alarm clock, tissue, or personal items. Place a lamp on top for reading.

    • If you're lucky enough to have a large bedroom walk-in closet, place a chest of drawers inside the closet and store loads of small things there, out of sight. If the ceiling is high enough, you will still be able to hang things above the chest.

  • In a Child's Room or Nursery

    • To get rid of your child's toys, use one drawer of a chest to store books, one for puzzles, one for art supplies, and one for other small items. When there's a place for everything the room will stay neater. The toys are handy whenever they need them.

    • A small chest placed in a child's closet will help to create more floor space in the room. Store small clothes in the drawers and hang items above on the clothes rod.

    • A chest of drawers topped by a pad and surrounded by a frame can do double duty as a changing table and storage chest. Attach a safety strap to secure the infant on the top during changing. Diapers and towels, clothes and sundry items are convenient in the drawers below.

  • In the Living Room or Family Room

    • Place a long, low chest of drawers behind a sofa or loveseat for storage, a place for a lamp and flowers, and to serve as a divider for a room. When the sofa is moved away from a wall or perpendicular to a wall, a chest defines the space.

    • A small, waist high chest of drawers serves well as an end table next to an armchair, sofa, or loveseat. The top offers more space than a traditional table top and the drawers offer storage for coasters, decks of cards, TV remote controls, or small items that just don't have any other home.

    • A sturdy, stable low chest of drawers is a good stand for a TV and the drawers are perfect for CDs, video cassettes, remote controls, and TV schedules.

    • Use a chest of drawers as a support on one side for a desk top. Build legs for the other side or place 2 small chests on either end of the top, drawers facing the chair. The drawers will be great for office and mailing supplies, computer paper, and note cards and stationery.

    • A high or low chest is a perfect place to store hobby supplies, such as puzzles, games, collections, sewing supplies, needlework books, model parts, or CDs.
