Definition: Sisal is a natural plant material that is commonly used for rugs and stair runners (the word refers to the plant as well as the fiber). The fiber is long, smooth and durable which is why it's so popular for flooring. It doesn't trap dust so light vacuuming is all that's needed. That said, water and moisture can cause the fibers to expand and break so you don't want it in an area that sees much moisture (such as a door mat that greets wet or snowy shoes and boots).
