Bamboo, rayon made from bamboo, or viscose made from bamboo are some of the latest textiles to pop up in the bedding industry, and they all boast one major trait: moisture-wicking properties. For hot sleepers, the appeal of moisture-wicking, silky bamboo sheets is obvious. However, it's important to understand how these materials vary from each other, so you know exactly what you're purchasing when shopping for bamboo sheets.

"Rayon (or viscose) made from bamboo" is the label that the Federal Trade Commission requires sellers to place on textiles "made from rayon that was created using bamboo as a plant source." Only textiles that use actual bamboo fibers may be called "bamboo." According to textile expert Deborah Young, bamboo is one of her top choices when it comes to materials for bed sheets. Some of the perks you often see with bamboo-derived sheets is that they are “incredibly absorbent, and they wick really well,” Young says.

To learn just how absorbent and comfortable these sheets are, we've tested bamboo sheets from a variety of brands and sellers. We've tested over 30 sets of bamboo-derived sheets to date and our latest round of bamboo sheets testing included 14 sheet sets. When evaluating these sheets in The Lab, we performed a variety of tests, analyzing features like texture, breathability, durability, quality, and overall value, to find the best options for different types of sleepers.

Additionally, after lab testing, we took our favorite sheets home to see how they would hold up with regular use over several months. We updated our list with our latest findings based on this long-term performance and considered all of our testing and expert insight when creating this list. Whether you prefer a silky smooth sheet or a super soft one, you’ll find a bamboo sheet set to love as much as we did in testing.

What to Know Before You Get Started

You might be wondering how bamboo is turned into a woven material for bedding. We’ve broken down all the terms you need to know about this relatively new textile:

  • Bamboo bedding products have strict requirements on how they must be labeled. You’ll most often see 100 percent bamboo, rayon made from bamboo, or viscose made from bamboo listed on a product label.
  • Rayon and viscose made from bamboo—viscose and rayon are both terms for synthetic fibers—are more common than textiles made from actual bamboo fibers.
  • You can also find products that are a mix of rayon/viscose made from bamboo and cotton or even microfiber. We’ve included a few sheet sets in our list that are hybrid fabrics, which still have the moisture-wicking abilities of bamboo. In terms of feel, microfiber can have a softer finish while cotton can feel more breathable and crisp compared to sheets constructed completely with rayon made from bamboo.

To learn more about bamboo bedding, read our What to Look for in Bamboo Sheets section.

Editor’s Note: This list was updated in February 2024 to include new long-term testing insights on all of the products.

  • Kept cool through a heatwave in long-term testing

  • Hold up well over time

  • Fitted sheet is spacious with good elastic

  • OEKO-TEX Made In Green certified

What We Don't Like
  • Some colors look inexpensive

Bampure Organic’s Bamboo Sheets blew us away with the quality and attention to detail in the design. These sateen sheets had durable stitching and envelope-style pillowcases, which was a major bonus in our book. They stayed cool during a heatwave, the sheets proved to be hugely beneficial for keeping us cool at night. Additionally, after six months of home use, we still found them to maintain their silky, cozy, and lightweight nature despite many washes.

We also love how silky and wrinkle-free these sheets stay after a night of sleep. A stretchy band on the fitted sheet, which already has 16-inch deep pockets, also provided a secure fit when we made the bed with them. We can see the elastic strap being especially beneficial if you’re using the sheets on a slimmer mattress, so you won’t feel the fitted sheet move underneath you at night.

It is worth noting, though, that while we found a lot of the color options to be aesthetically appealing with these sheets, some of the more saturated colorways do look less elegant. These bamboo viscose sheets are also OEKO-TEX Made In Green certified, meaning that they were produced using sustainable, socially responsible manufacturing processes.

How It Performed Long-Term

Beyond our initial testing, we found this sheet set holds up and demonstrates its value. For example, during a heatwave, the sheets proved to be hugely beneficial for keeping us cool at night. Additionally, by the six-month mark in testing, we still found them to maintain their silky, cozy, and lightweight nature despite months of washes.

Are bamboo sheets really made from bamboo?

Bamboo sheets can be made from 100 percent bamboo fibers. However, it is quite common to see blends of different fabrics with bamboo, and as a result, it is important to read the label and materials before purchasing, depending on what you are looking for. If you are looking to get the most out of the absorbency of your bamboo sheets, you will want to make sure that it is not blended with something like polyester.

What We Like
  • Get softer with time

  • Silky, slippery feel

  • Highly durable

  • Great temperature regulation

What We Don't Like
  • Fitted sheet can tighten after a wash

  • Prone to wrinkles

Cozy Earth’s Bamboo Sheet Set is almost double the price of the other bamboo sheet sets in our list, but we found it justifies its higher price tag through its silky and luxurious feel as well as its ability to stay cool and regulate temperature while being used.

The silky feel of these sheets is slightly different from true silk—think of it as an even softer sateen feel—so you won't feel like you're slipping off your bed at night. We loved how they didn’t show any signs of shrinkage or wear after washing, which was a bonus given we washed them in warm water, rather than the recommended cool water. They also don’t become too wrinkled, as long as you’re diligent about shaking them before drying and pulling them out once they’ve finished a dry cycle.

Wrinkles will still appear as you use these sheets, but they seem more pronounced when direct sunlight hits them, and they may not be as noticeable on some darker colors. The fitted sheet also shrank slightly after the first wash, which made it slightly challenging to fit on the mattress. However, we didn’t notice any major shrinking after this first wash, and the tighter fit ensures the fitted sheet stays on the mattress.

After six months, these sheets held up well, getting softer with use and washing. Some threads have given out, but that is to be expected after months of frequent use and machine washing them on hot, despite the manufacturer’s instructions to wash them in cold water.

How It Performed Long-Term

After three months of testing, we found these sheets hold up well, getting softer with use and washing. At the six-month mark, the sheet set has held up exceptionally well through many washes. Some threads have given out, but that is to be expected after months of frequent use and machine washing them on hot, despite the manufacturer’s instructions to wash them in cold water.

What We Like
  • Soft to the touch

  • Breathable and good at dispersing heat

  • High-quality construction

  • Great fit on our test mattress

What We Don't Like
  • Limited size options

  • Not as durable as other options we tested

The Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection by RHH stood out from the pack for the fabric's cooling power. In our tests, these sateen sheets were wonderfully soft to the touch, making for an extra cozy feel once we made the bed. We also liked how well these sheets dispersed heat. Though they did get mildly warmer when we slept on them, they quickly cooled down after we got out of bed. They also fit the bed like a glove and didn’t budge throughout the night, despite our tossing and turning.

We also particularly liked how well these sheets held up over time. They easily handled the wear and tear of everyday use, and we found they proved particularly durable. Coffee and oil stains came right out when we washed the bamboo material, though makeup left some residual staining. Most importantly, though, these sheets stayed soft after multiple washings.

These sheets come in a variety of pleasantly subdued colors—however, they only come in queen- and king-size sets, which is disappointing for households that have smaller or larger beds. After using these sheets at home for six months, they continued to feel exceptionally soft after washing and drying them. We loved how cool they remained and felt they were the perfect summer sheet, or year-round sheet if you’re a hot sleeper.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using these sheets at home for a month, we found they continued to feel exceptionally soft after washing and drying them. Our team member who tested them also noted that they do appear to wick moisture overnight. We found the sheets were prone to movement, and the fitted sheet sometimes rode up on our mattress, partially due to a less-than-ideal fit. But we'd still recommend them for their softness, quality, and moisture-wicking abilities.

What We Like
  • Handles abrasion and stains very well

  • No change in quality over several months

  • Appropriate for hot sleepers

What We Don't Like
  • Limited sizing

  • Wrinkles easily

Our most durable pick is Bamboo Bay’s 4-Piece Bamboo Sheet Set which is made from 100 percent viscose from bamboo in a sateen weave. We found that these sheets were exceptional at handling our abrasion tests and all of the stains we applied to them in testing (coffee, oil, and foundation) were completely removed.

Other features we liked were the ease with which the fitted sheet went on the mattress and the reliable fit of the elastic that lines the fitted sheet. They have the lightweight feel that bamboo sheets often provide, and if you don’t like the initial sheen of the sheets, you don’t have to worry; we found that it dulls after washing.

We did not overheat underneath the sheets, and they quickly cooled off when we got out of bed. Unfortunately, they are quite wrinkly, especially if you forget to pull them out of the dry cycle.

After six months of using these sheets at home, we didn't find any lasting stains, color fading, pilling, or tears, despite sometimes being used by restless sleepers and a cat. We noted that they fit the mattress well, but we had some issues with the sheets staying on the bed, due to the slickness of the fabric. On the plus side, we found them to feel cooling, which is a big perk for hot sleepers.

What We Like
  • Silky look and feel

  • Become more comfortable with wear

  • Option for monogramming

What We Don't Like
  • Absorb and hold onto body oils

  • Fitted sheet is smaller than advertised

While soft bedding materials like flannel cotton sheets often don’t wrinkle easily, some cotton-alternative sheets tend to wrinkle easily because of their thin structure. This can be true of bamboo sheets too, but, fortunately, The Company Store’s Cotton Bamboo Sheet Set is a great wrinkle-free option.

We like that these sheets maintain a silky and hotel-like luxury feel. The combination of 70 percent rayon from bamboo and 30 percent cotton results in a lightweight fabric, which makes it super easy to put the fitted sheet over the bed.

They are available in six earthy tones, and you can even have them monogrammed. We found the fitted sheet is smaller than specified in advertising, and the flat sheet is slightly longer—though, the latter we realized was beneficial for making the bed

Over time, this sheet set only further improved. At the six-month mark of using them at home, they showcased durability, without wearing away and remained soft. However, they aren't as cooling as other bamboo sheets on our list. Additionally, they seem to catch and hold onto body oils more than other sheets, so you may want to wash the pillowcases more frequently if you have an especially heavy skincare routine.

How It Performed Long-Term

Over time, this sheet set only further improved. After a month, the sheets maintained their soft and smooth feel while also staying wrinkle-free. At three months, we found them to only get more comfortable and to wash well. Finally, at the six-month mark, they showcased durability, without wearing away and remaining soft. However, they aren't as cooling as other bamboo sheets on our list. Additionally, they seem to catch and hold onto body oils more than other sheets.

What We Like
  • Great for the summer

  • Stretchy and easy to put on our test bed

  • Don’t shrink

What We Don't Like
  • Limited sizing

  • Flat sheet costs extra

If you’re not someone who is interested in sheets that are 100 percent bamboo, fret not, because there are great blends out there like Kassatex’s Linen-Bamboo Sheet Set. We found that the combination of these two materials results in a lightweight set of sheets that is ideal for the summer. Plus, they're aesthetically trendy.

Linen sheets are known for being lightweight and breathable, and the material has a distinct textural appearance that many people like. We found these sheets to provide that texture and feel while still being very soft. The bamboo portion of these sheets also makes them more stretchy, which makes it a breeze to re-make the bed in the morning.

Before washing these, we noticed some mild loose threads on the seams of the fitted sheet, but they were not made worse during washing and could be easily tied off and trimmed. This set is only available in queen and king sizes, which is very limited compared to other sets on our list and on the market. And the flat sheet is an extra cost.

Final Verdict

Our best overall bamboo sheet set is the Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection Sateen Sheet Set for its breathability, excellent fit, and multiple color choices. If you’re looking for a lower-priced option, we highly recommend Zen Bamboo's Luxury 1500 Series Bed Sheets, our best budget pick, which we like because the color doesn’t fade and the sheets also don’t shrink in the wash.

How We Tested the Bamboo Sheets

We have tested upwards of 200 different sets of sheets (34 of them bamboo-derived options) in The Lab to date, and we continually test the best sheets throughout the year so that we can stay on top of industry trends and new products. While our methodologies can be individual to specific tests, there are a few key criteria we evaluate whenever we lab test sheets.

When testing the above bamboo sheets, we scored each set on its texture, assessing the feel of the fabric both before and after washing it. We also noted any quality issues, including any discoloration, loose threads, or snags in the material. Another element of quality is how well the sheets fit on a bed—we note if each fitted sheet is tight-fitting or loose when putting it on a test bed, and we mimic tossing and turning to see if the sheets move or slip off the mattress’s corners.

The Spruce Tests Bamboo Cooling Sheets

To analyze the durability of the sheets, we conducted stain tests to see how different types of common stains (such as coffee, makeup, and oil) lifted from the fabric. Another test for durability includes rubbing sandpaper on the surface of the fabric and noting any loosened fibers or, worse, holes that appear. In our most recent round of bamboo sheet testing, we also tested for colorfastness by evaluating color transfer from one of the pillowcases.

Since temperature regulation can be a huge factor for many sleepers, we take a close look at the breathability of each sheet set. While our test methodologies have evolved over the years, we always make sure to note if a fabric feels cool to the touch and remains comfortably cool after lying on it (or, alternatively, if it warms quickly). In recent rounds of testing, we have also assessed the moisture-wicking capabilities of the sheets as an additional indicator of breathability.

All in all, we’ve spent over 19,000 hours testing sheets, so we’re confident that we know what to look for and what to recommend.

When Is the Best Time to Buy Bamboo Sheets on Sale?

Our list of bamboo sheets ranges from $115 to $390 in price, which makes this textile quite the splurge compared to cotton sheets and polyester bedding (which ranges from $50 to $200).

We recommend paying attention to end-of-season sales that retailers offer after summer and winter holidays—Labor Day and after Christmas sales are good times to find discounts. Retailers and manufacturers typically want to clear out their inventory for fresh products, which results in them offering major discounts on off-season products.

Our Shopping Tip

What to Look for in Bamboo Sheets

Material

When it comes to purchasing bamboo sheets, it may seem confusing to see all of the different textiles listed as materials. However, understanding textiles can be simplified. Textile expert Deborah Young tells us that lyocell and rayon are both celluloses, but they come from different trees. She adds that lyocell and Tencel are the same thing (Tencel is a specific brand that produces lyocell and modal fibers), though there is a shift in marketing where they are starting to refer to both of these materials as eucalyptus. Young also says that bamboo comes from a bamboo tree, Tencel and lyocell come from the eucalyptus tree, and modal comes from the beech tree.

Many terms have been used by brands to describe bamboo-derived fabrics (and many qualities attributed to them without much evidence). On the subject of bamboo-derived fabrics, the FTC states: “Textiles can only be called bamboo if they are made directly from actual bamboo fiber. Textiles made from rayon (or viscose, which is the same thing) that was created using bamboo as a plant source may be labeled and advertised as ‘rayon (or viscose) made from bamboo.’” The FTC has even cracked down on companies that have made unfounded claims about the source and eco-friendliness of rayon made from bamboo.

Rayon or viscose from bamboo will oftentimes be sold as the sole material in a set of sheets, but it can also be blended. Common materials that you can expect to see blended with bamboo include polyester or cotton. It is important to be very clear with what you expect and want from your sheets because blending them can create a trade-off. For example, while you might enjoy the feel of the added cotton in our most durable pick, Brooklyn Bedding’s Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton Sheets, you may find the material isn’t as moisture-wicking.

Weave

Bamboo comes in a variety of weaves, with sateen being the most common one featured in our roundup. The sateen sheets on our list include Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection by RHH Sheet Set (our best overall pick) and The Company Store Cotton Bamboo Sheet Set (our best wrinkle-resistant pick). Young tells us that she has seen bamboo sheets that are woven, as well as others that are knit, which comes with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Young says: “The knit is going to shrink more because knits always do, but knits are also softer and more cozy.”

Young adds that the sheets market is changing, with the mindset of people shifting away from the idea that a higher thread count, equals a better set of sheets. “The bigger the count means the denser the weave, and the less air permeable it is," she says. “Today, we’re shifting the conversation to GSM, which is grams per square meter, instead of higher thread count.”

Young notes that a higher thread count may feel more luxurious, and it may lead to less shrinking and wrinkling. However, she also recommends asking yourself: “Does it wick? Is it air-permeable?" A lower count is generally better if you’re a hot sleeper.

Durability

When it comes to the durability of bamboo sheets, Young tells us that you can expect some amount of shrinkage from them. However, she adds there are preventative measures you can take. “Shrinkage comes from heat and water, so if you reduce the heat you’re gonna reduce the shrinkage,” says Young. “A certain amount of it will still happen in water, but it’s mostly heat.”

Young warns that bamboo “is not the strongest fiber.” We have found through testing that bamboo-derived fabric tends to be less durable than other materials as it is such a soft material that it pills easily. We recommend keeping this in mind when washing it and be sure to follow specific manufacturer instructions. (This includes avoiding washing these in hot water.) Generally, we think it’s best to wash sheets weekly—or at the very least, every other week—to keep them fresh.

We found that the median shrinkage for both length and width in our recent round of bamboo sheets testing (which included the Bamboo Bliss and Bamboo Bay sheets on this list, plus a handful of other sets not chosen for this list) was under four percent. Before putting together the methodology for this recent testing, we spoke with industry expert Diana A Wyman of American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, who told us that five percent shrinkage is the average.

Beyond the shrinking potential, though, we tested a few options that really excelled in terms of fit. Particularly, our best overall selection, the Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection by RHH Sheet Set, went on easily and stayed in place throughout the night. And for added security through additional elastic in the corners of the fitted sheets, we really liked the Bampure Organic Bamboo Sheets, our best cooling pick on this list.
