Though you might think that a little boy just wants a place to play, from the time a little boy gets his own room, he’ll want everything to look “cool” or “hip.” Whether he’s wild and playful or thoughtful and pensive, the space should focus on his interests and activities.

When purchasing furniture for a boy’s room, try to think beyond the toddler years and look to buy major furniture pieces that will adapt as he grows up—which will be faster than you’d think possible. The main thing to think of for furniture for a boy’s room is that it is sturdy, even rugged. After all, through the years, he’ll be jumping around and climbing on and off for years.

Think outside the box and be creative with furniture for a child’s room. Find pieces at garage sales or flea markets and adapt them to the current need. When you have the budget for more, purchase pieces that will last through college days.

It’s a great idea to have some furniture on casters. You’ll be able to move the bed around the room, create a new arrangement of space, and adapt to the needs of your child’s age without investing in new pieces.

If your little guy’s room is small, get as much off the floor as you can to maximum floor space for playing. Mount shelving from the walls rather than standing it on the floor. Provide space off the floor for displaying trophies, books, hobby projects, collections, and sports gear. Of course, needs will change with changing age, but there will always be a need for storage.

It’s fun to choose a theme for your little boy’s room. Focus on your little guy’s special interest, favorite sport, favorite storybook character, or favorite color.

Furniture and the walls for a little boy’s room should be colorful and fun. Choose colors that are vibrant and bold to create a playful space for all the growing years.

  • First, a boy’s room should have a comfortable and fun bed, the best one you can afford. Even though he might not weigh much and hardly make a dent in the mattress, he needs firm support for a happy and healthy rest.

A great choice for a boy’s bed is a platform bed or loft bed. For a small room, you’ll double the space and get loads of storage at the same time.

Bunk beds are always fun and provide comfy space for sleepovers and slumber parties as the child grows up. Mom or Dad might even plan a sleepover in the child’s room from time to time. Use blankets to make a sleeping tent for extra fun.

  • The next great essential is a bedside table, a place to set the nighttime drink of water, book you’re be reading together, and the necessary reading lamp. Use a chair, a wooden box, or open shelving unit in place of a store-bought bedside table.

  • Storage is absolutely necessary and there are many ways to provide it for a little boy. Have a way to get everything off the floor—but be creative. Shelving allows toys and books to remain in plain view but organized. For an older little on, school lockers can be a colorful and cool place to stash stuff out of sight. Pull-out storage boxes can fit neatly under a raised bed. Colorful knobs or hooks on the wall offer space to get clothes off the floor.

  • Every little boy’s room must have playing space. Clear out the floor, put down a cushy faux fur rug, and your child will be happy for hours. When friends come over, they’ll have a comfy space to lounge and chat.

  • Be sure to provide a special space to display artwork, letters, school work, and special awards. A magnet or cork board mounted on the wall is the perfect place for this.

Have fun decorating your little boy’s room and he’ll enjoy years of fun and pride in his personal, special space.
