Lighting
Task lighting is important in any bathroom, but for a luxury bathroom it's also important to include ambient lighting. To create a romantic, rich look consider including a chandelier and possibly sconces. Look for materials like gilt and crystal to amp up the rich look. And most importantly, don't forget to include dimmer switches on all the lights.
Vanity
If you're starting from scratch and you need to put in a new vanity consider purchasing an antique marble-top chest of drawers and putting a sink in it. You'll lose some of the storage because the plumbing will need to be accommodated but depending on the chest you should still be able to get a drawer or two (this also works with old cabinets and buffets). This idea isn't for the faint of heart because once you've altered the piece you can't go back, but the results can be well worth it.
Floors
If it's in the budget it's more than worthwhile to invest in under-floor heating. Whatever material you choose it will feel terrific to step on a warm floor when getting out of the shower or going into the bathroom first thing in the morning.
Mirror
Say goodbye to those plain sheets of glass that go over vanities and go out and find your self a beautifully frames mirror. They're no more difficult to install than the traditional style and they're far more attractive and luxurious-looking.
Window Treatments
The days of simple roller blinds and shutters are gone. In a luxury bathroom you can go all out and include flowing drapes and curtains. Look for materials like silks and velvets (but keep the size of your bathroom in mind. You don't want to overwhelm the space). Don't be afraid to add embellishments like tassels and fringe.
Accessories
The easiest way to get the effect of a luxury bathroom without spending a lot of money is to choose accessories wisely.
- Towels – Invest in big fluffy towels and embellish them as you see fit. If you want a splash of color consider sewing on some grosgrain ribbon trim.
- Jars – Get rid of drugstore jars and boxes and put everything in pretty bottles and containers. Antique crystal bottles are great for cotton balls and Q-tips while decanters can be used for things like mouthwash. Silver mint julep cups can hold toothbrushes.
- Trays – To keep all those jars and containers looking organized, place them on a pretty tray or two. Trays are always great for corralling items and it's no different in the bathroom. Look for materials like silver, crystal, brass, mother of pearl, and anything else that looks luxurious and suits your room.
- Flowers – Keep a small vase of flowers in the bathroom. It may seem like a small thing but flowers can work wonders for adding a shot of color and life to any space. It can be as small as a few blossoms.
