Verywell Family / Kevin Liang

Convertible cribs transform like Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage—minus the Fairy Godmother—into multiple versions of themselves, like a toddler bed or twin bed. While Prince Charming isn’t included (you might need to buy a new mattress, too), convertible cribs are a clever solution that will grow with your child over many years. It’s essential to look beyond aesthetics and consider cost, safety, durability, and longevity so you can use it for one kiddo or multiple.

When shopping for a convertible crib, safety comes first. Thankfully, there are federal regulations in place to keep babies safe. For example, the bars of your baby's crib must be 2.375 inches apart, while the rail height (the mattress support at its lowest level to the top of the railing) needs to be at least 26 inches to help prevent injury and keep children from falling out of the crib. Moreover, be aware of dropside cribs: They’ve been banned and removed from the market by the Consumer Product Safety Commission since 2011. However, this crib style may still be circulating via secondhand sellers, and you should avoid them due to the suffocation and strangulation hazard.

While we’re not fairy godmothers, we did the next best thing—we spoke with a professor of pediatrics, a child sleep consultant, and a pediatrician to find out what to look for in convertible cribs. We narrowed our list to 15 cribs and sent them to our editors to test at home with the help of their children. Kid testers ranged in age from a newborn to a 3-year-old on the verge of transitioning to a toddler bed. Our editors assembled the convertible cribs and used them for two months, taking notes on assembly, ease of use, the material's durability, and if adjusting the crib mattress height was like waving a magic wand (or completely unmagical). We also had a board-certified pediatrician from our Review Board review this article for medical accuracy and integrity surrounding convertible cribs, safety features, and how to evaluate them. To ensure we’re recommending the best convertible cribs, our editors and their children still use these picks and will continue to provide feedback so we can keep this list up to date with the cribs’ longevity and durability.

Pros
  • Stunning, modern design

  • Fast and easy assembly

  • Two conversions with kits included

Cons
  • Packing materials required cleanup

  • Delivery time is 5-6 weeks

The Nestig Cloud Crib checks off all our boxes for a dream nursery crib with its versatility, impressive quality, and gorgeous design. When we first unboxed the convertible crib pieces, we immediately noticed how durable and attractive the materials are. The base and rails (made of sustainably harvested, solid Brazilian pine), the steel spindles, and the engineered wood of the mattress support are all non-toxic and lead- and phthalate-safe. The walnut color is classic, and true to what the company promises.

Assembling the mini crib is shockingly easy and intuitive. It only required one person to put it together (aside from an extra hand to take items out of the box). Although, we wish the instructions were more straightforward, as the pictures were small and difficult to understand. In addition, the crib pieces arrived in dusty bags, making the packing materials challenging to clean up. Otherwise, everything felt secure for shipping purposes, and we didn’t mind the post-assembly cleanup for what we received in return—an adorable and aesthetically pleasing mini crib.

While the Nestig Cloud Crib arrives as a mini crib, it transitions to a full crib and toddler bed with the included conversion kits—a huge plus since other popular options, like the Babyletto Gelato 4-in-1 Convertible Mini Crib, don’t include a toddler bed conversion kit or they are sold separately. In addition, the Nestig Cloud Crib includes the company’s hypoallergenic, polyurethane foam-filled mini crib mattress, which is encased in a non-removable polyester cover. Note that the 2-inch thick mattress is a unique size, so be prepared to purchase a set of the company’s mini crib sheets. We wish the sheets were part of the purchase, but we have no regrets buying them on our own—they’re incredibly soft and held up in the washer well, so we expect them to last a long time.

Wheels on the bottom allow you to place the crib near your bed for quick access and also lock in place to keep little ones secure. Once babies outgrow the mini crib style (up until 6 months old and depending on their height), adults can convert the Nestig Cloud to its full size and easily adjust to three height variations: 9.6, 14.8, and 20.7 inches. The full-size crib mattress is a separate purchase, but the company offers multiple options to get the crib and a mattress in one place. Children can use the full-size crib until they reach 35 inches tall or begin attempting their escape plan (climbing out). When that happens, simply convert the crib to a toddler bed, which measures 13 inches tall from the floor to the top of the mattress, and use it for years until your child reaches 50 pounds.

With the $749 price tag, you’re not just getting a convertible crib—you’re investing in a durable (and beautiful) piece of furniture your child can use for years. Nestig offers a 60-day free trial on all cribs and an 18-year limited warranty, ensuring you’re covered if the crib doesn’t perform to your standards. Because Nestig’s cribs are handmade in a Brazilian family-owned factory and are only made for confirmed orders to prevent waste, expect up to five weeks’ delivery time for the walnut wood color and up to six weeks for the natural wood color.

Pros
  • Mini crib converts to crib, toddler bed, and twin bed

  • Mid-century look

  • Easy to adjust height positions

Cons
  • Instructions confusing for mattress base assembly

If you’re working with a small space or simply want to save space in the baby’s nursery, the Babyletto Gelato 4-in-1 Mini Crib caters to your needs without compromising style. The little details of the Gelato Mini set it apart, like the interchangeable feet in several color options, including cool mint and navy blue, to give it an elevated mid-century look. We love how the sustainably sourced New Zealand pine wood material feels durable and that the engineered wood of the mattress support complies with the Toxic Substances Control Act, a federal regulation that monitors and screens for dangerous chemicals like asbestos or lead. Regardless of color option, the Gelato Mini is Greenguard Gold Certified, meaning it underwent testing for thousands of chemicals and it passes emission standards. In addition, the non-toxic, lead- and phthalate-safe paint and stain are lead- and phthalate-safe, which also complies with ASTM International and U.S. CPSC safety standards.

We were impressed with the packaging of the crib pieces inside the box—everything was in the order you needed, which was extremely handy. Despite image directions only, we assembled the crib in just 45 minutes without the help of a second person (although a second hand would have been helpful a couple of times during assembly). All tools, hardware, and other assembly pieces arrive in the box and are easily identifiable. Putting the crib together was straightforward until we assembled the mattress base. Unfortunately, the instructions for that step confused us when we put the crib together for the first time.

After assembling the crib, we tested how to adjust the included 1-inch mattress pad height and conversions. While we found it easier to adjust the height with two people, we could do it with one and found the entire process simple, unlike the non-intuitive setup of the Stokke Sleepi Crib (parts needed to be labeled better). As for conversions, the Gelato Mini Crib transitions from a crib to a daybed, toddler bed, and even a twin bed, so your child can use the bed frame for many years. However, it’s important to note that the toddler and twin bed conversion kits, and the accommodating mattresses, are separate purchases. Be sure to check the dimensions of the mattress you choose compared to the crib, as the Newton mattress we used fits tightly in the crib’s interior of 37 x 24 inches. Babyletto recommends purchasing their Pore Core Crib Mattress, which you can add to your cart at checkout to make it easy. When used as a mini crib, the Gelato Mini is safe until children reach 35 inches tall or start trying to climb out of their crib, up to 50 pounds when used as a toddler bed, and up to 500 pounds as a twin.

We think $299 is a steal for this mini crib (in fact, we would even pay a little more for it—but that’s between you and us, of course). In addition to saving space where you need it most, the crib is easy to set up, lightweight, easy to move around, and tailors to your design taste with interchangeable feet.

Bonus: When you sign up for the company’s emails for the first time, you’ll receive 10% off your purchase.

Pros
  • Nine color options

  • Four mattress height positions

  • Toddler bed conversion kit included

Cons
  • Two sets of screws nearly identical (caused brief rebuild)

  • Second person helpful when adjusting mattress height

With nine color options, like forest green or washed natural (some with matching or contrasting spindles), there’s no shortage of charm with the Babyletto Lolly Convertible Crib. Regardless of the color you pick, the Lolly, which is a full-size crib, features the same beautiful, sustainable New Zealand pine wood as its mini counterpart, the Gelato. In addition, the Lolly is finished with a non-toxic paint and stain that’s lead- and phthalate-safe, and is Greenguard Gold Certified, meaning it underwent scientific testing for more than 10,000 chemical emissions to ensure it's safe for babies to use. With three conversions available—crib, toddler bed, and daybed—you’re sure to get years of use out of this bed, and its style easily adapts to a child’s growing taste.

Clear and consistent instructions made assembling the clean, minimalistic design easy—minus one hiccup we ran into with the screws: Two sets of screws looked identical, making it hard to differentiate when assembling. Unfortunately, we used the wrong screws and had to break it down and rebuild part of the crib, but that hiccup didn’t take away from us appreciating the seamless assembly otherwise (it only took us one hour!). A minor downside we noticed was slight paint chips and indents in various places after assembly, although you couldn’t see them easily unless you were looking for them.

A 7-month-old helped us test the adjustability of the four mattress height positions when he decided to show off and pull himself up to stand inside the crib. Lowering the mattress height is doable with one person, but we recommend having a second person nearby. When you unscrew the mattress railing on one side, it quickly drops to the floor, making it heavy for one person to hold and balance the railing at the same time to screw it into a new position height. While the Babyletto Lolly doesn’t come with a crib mattress, the company offers the option to add their hypoallergenic Pure Core Crib Mattress (52 x 27.75 inches) to your purchase for an additional $199. Or, you can opt to purchase a separate standard crib mattress to fit the 52 x 28 interior crib measurements. Children can use the Lolly as a crib until they’re 35 inches tall or start trying to climb out, and the toddler bed functions for kids up to 50 pounds.

Unlike the Gelato, the Lolly includes the toddler conversion kit with your $499 purchase, so you don’t have to buy it down the road (but there’s no option to convert to a twin like the Gelato). After two months of use, the crib has held up well and still feels well-made, firm, and sturdy—there’s no movement of the crib at all, even when putting a baby to sleep at night (a priceless feature for parents and caregivers who don’t want to wake a sleeping baby).

Pros
  • Made in Fair Trade Certified facility

  • Quick assembly, even with one person

  • Solid construction

Cons
  • Tightening mattress platform was finicky

  • Pieces slightly heavy

The Pottery Barn Kendall Convertible Crib takes you back in time (in a good way) with its classic, traditional design. We love that it’s made in a Fair Trade Certified facility, meaning the manufacturing factory supports a safe and fair working environment for workers. The solid poplar wood pieces felt durable (even a little heavy) and arrived well-packed in the box with clearly labeled hardware pieces. We appreciate the mortise-and-tenon construction (in which a piece of wood fits directly into another piece of wood) that provides sturdiness to the crib’s assembly, which only took 23 minutes to complete with one person, even though the instructions recommend two people. The only frustrating part we experienced during assembly was tightening the metal mattress platform with the included Allen wrench to the back of the crib. Still, the entire process was quick, and we only referred to the assembly manual to confirm we were putting pieces together correctly.

This Pottery Barn crib comes in five color options: weather white, navy blue, gray, seadrift, and simply white. You can also choose to purchase the crib only, the crib with a 52 x 27.5-inch mattress, or the crib with a toddler bed conversion kit. In addition, Pottery Barn offers the Kendall crib with either the Pottery Barn Kids Lullaby Two-Stage Crib Mattress or Beautyrest Supreme Two-Stage Crib Mattress. Both mattresses are Greenguard Gold Certified (just like the crib itself) and CertiPUR-US certified, which ensures the foam inside is free of mercury, lead, PBDE flame retardants, and other dangerous chemicals. Additionally, both mattresses feature a toddler side and edges with reinforced border wire and foam corner wraps to increase longevity. The Lullaby’s vinyl surface is waterproof, while the Beautyrest Supreme has a woven fabric cover with a waterproof backing.

Three mattress heights ensure the crib is safe once a child starts standing and adjusts to 24.5, 19.5, and 14.5 inches tall. Adjusting the mattress height is a seamless process thanks to four screwed-in supports that remove and easily adjust with an Allen wrench (it took us less than five minutes!). When a child reaches 35 inches tall or attempts an escape from the crib, it’s time to convert to the toddler bed (the conversion kit is sold separately but can be added to your initial purchase).

Depending on your color choice, you’re looking at a $599 to $699 price tag for the Pottery Barn Kendall Convertible Crib without a mattress or toddler bed conversion kit. If you add a mattress or the conversion kit, be prepared for an additional $100 to $200. We think the Kendall meets a family’s needs immediately and beyond (newborn to toddler years), and you can’t forget the durable and high-quality materials. Plus, for each piece of indoor wood furniture sold, Pottery Barn plants a tree (how cool is that?).

Pros
  • Less than 10-minute assembly

  • Easy to adjust heights

  • Sturdy construction

Cons
  • Washers leave visible marks when adjusting height

We think the Newton Baby Austin Convertible Crib deserves a medal for its no-fuss, no-muss assembly. The solid, sustainable beechwood materials arrive in only five pieces with a small bag of screws and a hex key (a.k.a. Allen wrench). Clear instructions make it easy to assemble the crib, but the entire process feels intuitive even without them. We used the included hex key to secure two screws on each side and assembled the crib in only nine minutes (see what we mean about a medal?). We love that the crib’s wooden material and non-toxic finishes, in all three available colors, are Greenguard Gold Certified to meet environmental safety standards (and keep your child safe). Each crib is handmade in an Italian woodworking shop, so your baby’s crib will be one-of-a-kind with quality construction, which we found true when we felt how sturdy the crib was.

Raising or lowering the three mattress heights is intuitive, as you only need to unscrew four screws, raise the foundation, and then put the screws back in. Our issue is with the washers—they provide sturdiness to the overall crib thanks to special grooves that dig into the frame, but they do leave visible scuff marks on the beautiful wood when adjusting to different heights. Otherwise, this was the only wear and tear we noticed after two months of testing.

A mattress and the toddler bed conversion kit (only a rail is needed) don’t come with the crib, but adding them to your purchase is easy by simply checking a box at checkout. You can add the company’s original mattress or waterproof mattress—both of which come in different colors, like gray or pink—for an additional $300 or $350, but you save $75 off your entire order. In addition, Newton Baby offers a 100-night free trial with their mattress, so if you aren’t happy with it, you can return it at the company’s expense for a full refund. As for the toddler rail, take $99 off your purchase when you add it to your order. Even if you only choose the crib, it all ships free in three to five business days, so you won’t have to wait long.

The $450 value is great for the nice design, easy assembly, and high-quality material. Additionally, the company offers a two-year warranty on all parts and overall construction in case of defects or manufacturing errors.

Pros
  • Solid and sturdy construction

  • Lowest mattress height is low (great for toddlers)

  • Straightforward, simple assembly

Cons
  • Solid wood on sides (not slats)

The Pottery Barn Mid-Century Convertible Crib is a taste of classic style and high-quality craftsmanship. The quality of the sap gum wood and MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is solid and sturdy, and we appreciate that it’s sustainably sourced and kiln-dried to prevent splitting, warping, cracking, and mildew. Like the Pottery Barn Kendall Crib, the Mid-Century is Greenguard Gold Certified, so you don’t have to worry about dangerous chemicals in the water-based paint finishes, and made in a Fair Trade Certified facility.

The crib is available in five color options, from acorn to navy blue. Regardless of color, you’ll love how straightforward assembly is. While we recommend a second person to help hold pieces up, the crib is easy to assemble, thanks to the helpful and straightforward instructions. We moved the crib around a room to test its durability and nothing became loose or damaged in the process—even those stylish mid-century legs held up well. The only slight issue we encountered was the inability to see a baby on the monitor due to the solid wood sides, so we had to move the monitor to another location in the room.

An adjustable metal mattress platform allows you to pick between two mattress heights, 9.75 or 17.5 inches, to accommodate a growing child. We didn’t notice any issues when testing the adjustments, and everything felt secure regardless of height. As for mattresses, Pottery Barn gives you the option to purchase the Mid-Century crib with the Lullaby Two-Stage Crib Mattress or Beautyrest Supreme Two-Stage Crib Mattress—both of which measure 52 x 27.5 inches. The crib mattresses offer a 2-in-1 design, meaning one side is for infants and the other for toddlers, and are CertiPUR-US certified, which ensures the foams inside are free of heavy metals and other potential hazards. While adding a mattress to your order is an additional cost ($200 or $300, depending on your selection), you won’t have to second guess if the mattress will fit properly inside the crib. Once a child reaches 35 inches tall (or tries to climb out of the crib), it’s time to convert to a toddler bed (conversion kit sold separately).

Pottery Barn creates high-quality pieces, so expect to pay a higher price upfront for longevity. However, the crib's durability is strong enough to last through multiple children and is well worth the investment. And don’t forget that Pottery Barn plants a tree for every indoor wood furniture piece sold.

Pros
  • Mid-century look on a budget

  • Easy assembly

  • No wear and tear after months of use

Cons
  • Material didn’t feel high-quality

At $220, the Delta Children Essex 4-in-1 Convertible Crib is one of the lowest-priced cribs on our list—and you still get four conversion options. This modern nursery crib blends in beautifully with home decor and transforms into a toddler bed (conversion kit sold separately) and daybed/sofa (rail included), so you’ll get plenty of use out of it for the years to come. With a JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) certification, the Delta Essex meets all U.S. safety standards, including its non-toxic multi-step painting process that’s lead- and phthalate-safe. While the crib mattress is separate, the company recommends its brand, Serta, and Beautyrest crib mattresses, although a standard-size crib mattress works, too (at least 27 1/4 x 51 5/8 inches).

Before testing the crib’s height adjustability, we put the crib together. Everything arrived well packaged, containing extra parts in case anything went missing. There’s only one screw type (no second guessing if you’re using the right one), and the instructions diagrams are clear. We had one editor assemble the crib alone in an hour and a half, and they noticed that while the material didn’t feel of high quality, they didn’t question its longevity. Adjusting the three mattress height positions is as easy as assembly—simply remove four screws, find the position you want, and put the screws back in (we only needed one person). Following two months of solid use, we’re happy there’s no wear and tear and the crib still seems brand new.

We think the value of the crib’s mid-century design, ease of use, and assembly is worth the low investment. While the toddler bed rail is sold separately, it’s only $80 to $110, depending on color—much less than the $200 toddler bed conversion kit for the Pottery Barn Mid-Century Convertible Crib

Pros
  • Eight conversions

  • Some conversions use wheels

  • Includes bassinet/midi pad

Cons
  • Full-size crib mattress sold separately

  • Wood quality could be better

Can’t decide between a bassinet or a mini crib? The Babyletto Yuzu gives you both, plus six more conversion options with included kits for each one. This convertible crib grows with your child, converting into a bassinet, midi (or mini) crib, full-size crib, midi toddler bed, midi daybed, full-size toddler bed, full-size daybed, and junior bed. With so many conversion options (eight total), there were a lot of parts, and the easy-to-follow instructions came in handy. It took us approximately two hours to set up the crib in its full-size stage, but we love the result: a sleek, low-profile design with an included mattress board, wheels for portability, and pads for the bassinet and midi sizes.

We appreciate the sustainably sourced New Zealand pine wood, but thought the crib quality could be better. For example, the crib's sides were relatively loose when a 1-year-old shook the rails, but tightening the screws solved the problem. Plus, we felt sure our kids were safe in this crib thanks to its Greenguard Gold Certification, and the crib’s non-toxic paint and stain process that exceeds U.S. safety standards.

The only piece missing from the Babyletto Yuzu is a full-size mattress. The company includes a 1-inch bassinet pad and a custom 2-inch midi pad (both waterproof with food-grade polyethylene and recyclable polyester core) with your purchase and recommends their 4-inch Pure Core Midi Crib Mattress for extra support. Regardless of your mattress selection, the bassinet and midi stages adjust to four height options, while the full-size crib features three heights. Configuring the different heights is seamless but takes some work, as you have to take some of the frame apart, adjust it, and put it back together.

A price of $599 for eight conversions sounds too good to be true—except it is true. Babyletto allows you to add the company’s crib mattress (encased with a waterproof cover) for an additional $199 and crib sheets in various styles for $38.

Pros
  • Four mattress height positions

  • Easy-to-follow assembly

Cons
  • Difficult to adjust mattress heights

  • Long assembly time

The Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 Convertible Crib makes big milestones like sitting and standing up an easy transition for parents and caregivers thanks to four adjustable mattress positions. Before we tested the height adjustments, we put the solid New Zealand pine wood pieces together. Instructions were picture-based and easy to understand, but assembly took two hours because there were many steps and similar pieces. We love the rounded-spindle design, open silhouette, multiple color options painted with non-toxic paint and stain, and (like all the other cribs on our list) Greenguard Gold Certification to ensure the crib is up to safety standards.

Adjusting the height of the mattress requires an Allen wrench and takes about 10 minutes of hard work. We struggled to find a good angle through the crib bars for adjusting, but we appreciate the low-profile design that makes putting a newborn to sleep an absolute breeze. Otherwise, you can lower the mattress height as children begin to sit up and stand. Although a standard crib mattress doesn’t come with the Babyletto Hudson, you can add the company’s hypoallergenic Pure Core Crib Mattress (52 x 27.75 inches) at checkout. Unlike the Newton x dadada Austin Convertible Crib, the Hudson includes the toddler bed conversion kit, so you don’t have to buy it separately later. However, a different conversion kit is available to transform the crib into a junior-sized bed.

This convertible crib falls in the middle regarding prices—it’s not a budget-friendly option or a splurge. However, the crib’s price is fair, the design is modern, and it lives up to safety standards, making it a solid choice for families somewhere in between.

Pros
  • Lockable, swivel wheels

  • Easy to adjust mattress height

  • Unique shape

Cons
  • Difficult setup

  • Requires brand-specific mattress

With an $850 price tag, the Stokke Sleepi Crib is the most expensive pick on our list, but for a good reason. The crib’s overall design is simple yet unique, and it’s a solid, high-quality crib, thanks to the European beech wood it’s made from. Assembling the crib was not simple, though, and was the most frustrating part of testing this. We had to watch YouTube videos and read the instructions again and again to decipher the poorly labeled parts. It took us more than an hour to put it all together. We love the uncommon oval shape, but it’s wide and may not fit through every doorway. Still, we love the lockable, swivel wheels that allow parents and caregivers to move the crib easily, whether near their bed or in baby’s nursery down the hall.

Once the crib’s assembly is complete, it’s mostly smooth sailing. It’s easy to adjust the four mattress height positions, which allows you to use the crib for years. However, the Stokke Sleepi crib mattress isn’t a standard shape, so you’ll have to purchase it (and the sheets) separately. It’s worth it, though, because the mattress is made with several layers of 3D mesh for better airflow, meets U.S. safety standards with its non-toxic materials, and—one of our favorite features—is washable (both the core and removable cover). The Stokke Sleepi converts from a crib to a toddler bed with the same special oval shape, but the conversion kit is sold separately

The Stokke Sleepi Crib is costly, but you’re paying for quality. The wood material is solid; we even bumped it into some walls accidentally, and it still looked good as new. Plus, the company says children up to 5 years old can use it, meaning you’ll get lots of use out of it for years, including through more than one kiddo if you need it.

Pros
  • Storage drawers

  • Converts to a full-size bed

  • Sleek, sturdy design

Cons
  • Complicated, long assembly

  • Graco logo on front

When you have a kid, there’s no such thing as too much storage space—which is only one of the reasons why we love the Graco Benton 4-in-1 Convertible Crib with Drawer. What sets this convertible crib apart from the others on our list is the two-compartment storage drawer underneath with stylish metal handles that double as a stand-out accent. However, we noticed it was a little hard to clean under the crib because of the drawers. With extra storage space came more pieces to put together, too. The crib’s assembly was complicated, taking us more than two hours to assemble, despite detailed instructions. We placed some of the sustainable New Zealand pine wood pieces in the wrong spot, which caused us to retrace our steps and try again. Still, the sleek and sturdy design is worth the challenging assembly and fits many nursery decor styles well. The only design feature we don’t like is the Graco logo on the front of the crib at the bottom.

After two months of consistent use, this Graco crib has been a dream. It’s no match for an active 17-month-old who enjoys kicking the crib’s side (though this has resulted in a noise from the top panel). Adjusting the crib mattress to one of three options requires an additional piece but was much easier than the assembly. In addition to multiple mattress height options, we love how the Graco converts from a crib to a toddler bed, daybed, and full-size bed with a headboard and optional footboard. All conversion kits and mattresses are separate purchases, but everything is Greenguard Gold Certified and underwent testing to meet all federal safety standards.

The Graco Benton Convertible Crib tops out at an affordable $250 with the same functionality as some of the more expensive cribs on our list. The crib grows beyond a twin-size bed, so your child can use it even into their teenage years—it almost feels a little sentimental, doesn’t it?

How We Rated Convertible Cribs

  • 4.8 to 5 stars: These are the best convertible cribs we tested. We recommend them without reservation.
  • 4.5 to 4.7 stars: These convertible cribs are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them.
  • 4.0 to 4.5 stars: We think these are great convertible cribs, but others are better.
  • 3.5 to 3.9 stars: These convertible cribs are just average.
  • 3.4 and below: We don't recommend convertible cribs with this rating; you won't find any on our list.

Convertible Cribs We Also Tested

  • Delta Children Sweet Beginnings 6-in-1 Convertible Crib: We appreciated the well-labeled parts and quick assembly but noticed the crib’s finished construction didn’t feel as solid.
  • Oeuf Sparrow Crib: While we are currently testing this crib, we love its dreamy assembly (pieces are well-packed, and a full-size screwdriver included). However, this crib, which is the most expensive we tested, doesn’t include a toddler bed conversion kit, and we needed solid upper body strength to adjust the mattress height.

How We Tested Convertible Cribs

Fifteen editors evaluated top-rated convertible cribs in the comfort of their homes for two months with the help of their kiddos, ages newborn up to 3 years old, and assessed each on several attributes, such as ease of setup and use, durability, adjustability, and overall value. We also spoke with Benjamin Hoffman, MD, CPST-I, FAAP, a professor of pediatrics at the Oregon Health & Science University and the chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention, for guidance on how to test convertible cribs safely; Elizabeth Murray, DO, MBA, FAAP, board certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine; and Aubrie DeBear, PsyD, child sleep consultant and expert for Tommee Tippee’s Spill The Milk Series. These knowledgeable experts gave us valuable insights into what to look for in convertible cribs. Moreover, we referred to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for crib safety guidelines.

We first unboxed the cribs and pulled out the various parts to assemble them. We started a stopwatch to time how fast or long it took to assemble the crib. During the assembly process, we noted if editors needed an additional person, whether parts attached seamlessly or extra tools were necessary, and if directions were clear and easy to follow (or the opposite). Additionally, we wanted to know if there were any noticeable chemical odors, either from paint or other finishes.

Once editors assembled the cribs, we dropped in the mattresses and moved the cribs around the room. We shook and pulled the bars of the cribs to determine if they felt stable and sturdy or loose and if any dings occurred. We also wanted to know if the mattress fit snugly inside the crib and whether adjusting the height positions was easy or difficult.

We used a stopwatch again to time how long the process was to convert the crib to a toddler bed. We noted how the parts fit together—if anything felt loose or unsecured, and whether the crib came with a conversion kit or was a separate purchase.

Following initial testing, we had families use the cribs at home, considering durability over two months. If any cribs suffered damage or fell apart during testing, we stopped using them immediately (although this hasn’t happened to any of the cribs we’ve tested). To ensure we’re recommending the best convertible cribs, we continue using the cribs well beyond the two-month mark with children of all ages. We will continue to update this list with the most current information on quality and how the cribs hold up over time.

What to Look for When Buying a Convertible Crib

Safety

All new cribs on the market must meet federal safety standards that spell out how far bars or spindles should be, plus many other details, so you can rest assured that any new crib you unbox will be safe. For example, bar spacing on a crib should be no more than 2.375 inches apart, and there should be at least 26 inches of bar space above the crib mattress when it’s sitting at its highest point. Moreover, baby cribs should be free of any decorative carvings or cut-outs that could be hazardous to a curious baby. (This is also why antique and hand-me-down cribs are best kept as decorative items; it’s tough to guarantee they’re safe, and it’s simply not worth the risk.).

Remember, boring is best, according to Dr. Murray, and you don’t need all the bells and whistles to create a safe sleep space for your baby. Dr. Murray says fitted sheets should fit correctly, as babies can’t brush anything off their face due to a lack of head control, posing a suffocation hazard if the sheet doesn’t fit properly.

Conversion and Mattress Options

Convertible cribs offer many conversion options, like toddler, day, twin, and full-size beds. However, not all convertible cribs have the same conversions, so you’ll want to consider your family’s needs. Suppose you plan to have young kids close together—in that case, you may need a crib with multiple mattress height options, like the Babyletto Hudson Convertible Crib. Or, if this is your last child, then a 4-in-1, such as the Delta Children Essex 4-in-1 Convertible Crib, may be ideal so that it’s the only bed you’ll need to buy for them.

If the crib converts into a toddler bed, it should sit low to the ground to prevent an injury if the child happens to fall out. Look for a toddler bed conversion kit with a bed rail, as that piece is better for injury prevention, Dr. DeBear says.

While convertible cribs are convenient, they may cost you a little extra upfront, depending on the type or brand you choose and any additional pieces needed. Not all conversion kits (and mattresses) are sold with a crib and must often be purchased individually.

Materials and Durability

Since your baby will inevitably start chewing on the crib’s railing, ensure you’re getting one made of materials free of toxins and chemicals. In addition to safe materials, a high-quality paint or stain won’t chip over time, so you can get as much use from the crib as possible.

A crib shouldn’t wiggle or make much noise when a child is in it. Plus, your baby may climb out of their crib at some point, so you want the crib to be durable, strong, and one you can reuse if needed.

As for crib mattresses, Dr. Murray says they must meet specific safety guidelines for materials. Like adult mattresses, crib mattresses are made of different materials, some with a firm side and others a softer side. Often, a crib mattress features a 2-in-1 design, meaning one side is made more firm for infants and the other softer for toddlers. Whether you want to splurge or save money, a crib mattress' most crucial buying factor is safe materials. Look for crib mattresses that are Greenguard Gold Certified, which ensures they’ve been tested for thousands of chemicals to make the mattress safe for littles to use.

Design and Functionality

Consider the crib’s overall design, like if it’s trendy enough for two children, if it works for your lifestyle or nursery decor, and whether you can adjust its height when a baby starts to try escaping. For example, if you have a small room to work with, you’ll want a compact crib, like our best overall pick, the Nestig Cloud Crib.

Dr. Murray says when babies begin to roll, they can roll off unexpectedly, so lower the crib mattress before you think you need to, just to be on the safe side. Don’t be surprised if you walk into your baby’s room to find them sitting or standing up one day—take action beforehand.

Cost

Convertible cribs are an investment—they’re furniture that grows with your child. To give you perspective, we tested convertible cribs ranging from as low as $200 up to $960. Many factors affect the cost of a convertible crib, like brand, material, and whether conversion kits come with the crib. Moreover, crib mattresses are sometimes (not always) included with a crib’s purchase, so you’ll want to double-check as you’ll be looking at an additional cost if it’s not.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between a regular crib and a convertible crib?

A standard crib is just that—a crib without any conversions. Typically, standard cribs allow you to raise the mattress for younger babies and set it lower once they are old enough to pull up on the railing. Besides having the option to raise or lower the mattress, regular cribs do not offer other conversions.

Depending on the convertible crib, they transform into a toddler, day, twin, and sometimes full-size beds with conversion kits. Although these special kits (and mattresses) may be a separate addition to a crib’s purchase, they’re a one-time cost because they adapt to a growing child’s needs.

  • How long does a baby stay in a convertible crib?

There is no specific age for a child to transition into a toddler bed. Their development, size, and the crib manufacturer’s recommendations are big considerations. Dr. DeBear says parents and caregivers should consider whether their child is safer in or out of the crib before making a move. For example, if your child is climbing out of the crib (or attempting to), it’s time to transition to a toddler bed. Otherwise, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and transition when your child reaches the height limit. In general, children should transition out of the crib when they reach 35 inches tall or when the side rail’s height is less than three-quarters of their height, which is approximately nipple level.

  • Is it worth it to get a convertible crib?

In short, yes. We think convertible cribs are worth the higher upfront cost because they pay for themselves (and more) for years to come. From a crib to toddler, day, and twin beds, and sometimes a full-size bed, you’re not just buying a place for your baby to sleep—you’re purchasing a piece of furniture a newborn will still use at 4 years old (and possibly as a teenager) or can pass on to a sibling.
