The 14 Best Duvet Covers of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

Level up your bedding with these cozy, durable, and stylish picks

Person sleeping in a bed made with a JELLYMONI 100% Natural Cotton 3pcs Striped Duvet Cover Set

The Spruce / Henry Wortock

A duvet cover is more than just a layer to keep your comforter or duvet insert protected; it also keeps you comfortable and enhances your design scheme. Even though we’ve tested 56 duvet covers made from a variety of fabrics—from breathable, textured linen to buttery-smooth sateen—we found that our favorite options all stayed securely fastened to the comforter, had a soft and cozy texture, and were machine washable.

After over 60 hours of inspecting, folding, staining, laundering, and of course, snuggling with each duvet cover in The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa, we’re confident we’ve found the best picks for every household. We’ve evaluated each cover by examining details such as quality, texture, durability, and value. Additionally, we slept with these duvet covers at home for six months, noting how they held up after consistent use and typical washing and drying.

What to Know Before You Get Started

You’ll want to consider your sleep preferences, so you can choose a duvet cover fabric that meets your breathability and texture needs.

  • Cotton is a naturally breathable and durable material, which is most often sold in sateen and percale weaves. It’s also one of the most common materials on our list because of its comfort for both hot and cold sleepers and versatility.
  • Bamboo and eucalyptus are known for their exceptionally smooth and soft texture. Bedding made from these fabrics also tends to be moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, making it a great choice for hot sleepers.
  • Hemp, which offers a similar texture to linen, is highly durable and gets softer in time. The sustainable material can be on the heavier side but is also quite temperature-regulating, making it suitable for year-round use.
  • Microfiber is a synthetic material that is smooth to the touch, wrinkle- and stain-resistant, and easy to care for. Depending on the construction quality, microfiber may be less breathable and durable compared to other fabrics, but is also more affordable.

What We Don’t Like
  • Some shedding upon arrival

In our testing, the Bare Home Duvet Cover hit the mark on all fronts, impressing us with its luxurious texture, quality construction, and thoughtful design. This duvet cover is made from 100 percent polyester microfiber, making it the only pick on this list made from synthetic fibers. Its impressive performance exceeded that of many other natural-fiber duvet covers on the market.

Upon arrival, we were immediately impressed with the buttery-soft, brushed texture of the duvet cover. It’s one of the most comfortable options we tested and was fairly wrinkle-free. Although the fabric has a thinner feel, the drape is nice and heavy and the construction quality was immediately evident. This duvet cover won’t add much additional warmth, so if you’re looking for even more insulation on top of your duvet, this may not be the pick for you. We also noticed a bit of shedding during our initial inspection, so you’ll want to wash this duvet cover before using it.

In terms of design, we love the duvet cover’s convenient zipper closure, which is sturdy and glides smoothly. This hides the entirety of the insert, giving it a clean and refined look. It also comes with a whopping eight ties (one on each corner and one on each side) compared to the usual four, which helped keep the insert securely in place.

After following the care instructions, we were pleased to find that the duvet cover held up very well. The color did not fade and we noticed no signs of wear throughout. Plus, we found that it got even softer post-wash. This duvet cover proved highly durable, as it withstood sandpaper abrasion with virtually no changes in quality or texture. Additionally, we love how stain-resistant this product is, as both the oil and coffee stains came out completely, and there was only a slight hint of foundation after spot treatment and laundering.

Who needs a duvet cover?

Anyone who prefers to sleep under a down or down alternative duvet insert should plan to buy a duvet cover—even if it's nice enough to display on its own like Pottery Barn's HydroCool Duvet Insert. Unlike comforters or blankets, duvet inserts generally aren't designed to be washed frequently, as doing so can damage down over time, cause the fill to get lumpy, or even melt synthetic fibers. It's especially important for anyone who prefers to sleep without a top sheet to get a duvet cover to protect their duvet insert. Consider purchasing bedding like a duvet cover an investment that, over time, will pay off by extending the life of your duvet insert.

  • Breathable and lightweight yet sturdy

What We Don’t Like
  • Button closure instead of zipper

Another top option that stood out during our tests is the Parachute Sateen Duvet Cover, offering both comfort and style. Made with refined and breathable long-staple Egyptian cotton that gets better with time, this duvet cover feels so soft and lightweight that you won’t want to leave your bed. It's also very breathable, so you can stay bundled without overheating, making this duvet cover ideal for different climates and seasons.

After sleeping with this duvet cover at home for two months, we found that the sateen fabric was the perfect all-season material since it stayed cool enough on hotter days but warmed up just enough when temperatures dropped. It’s also exceptionally soft and cozy on the skin.

Off the bat, we were impressed with its high-quality construction, as the duvet cover fit well around the insert and looked clean and neat on the bed. While fitting the cover around the duvet proved to be very easy, we do wish there was a zipper closure (like the Bare Home Duvet Cover, our best overall pick has) instead of a buttoned design for added convenience. However, this is a very minor qualm, and we’re happy to report that we had no issues with the insert shifting or bunching in our long-term tests.

The duvet cover felt as good as new even after washing it and it maintained its soft yet sturdy texture. There were no visible imperfections or signs of wear after using it for two months at home. Parachute also offers the option to buy the cover individually or as a set with matching shams, which is great if you prefer a mix-and-match aesthetic. Though on the higher price end, this duvet cover is stylish, easy to clean, and creates such comfort that the value simply outweighs the cost.

What We Like

  • Two-way zipper closure

What We Don’t Like
  • No solid color options

  • Not the softest pick

If you’re in the market for a wallet-friendly duvet cover, the Jellymoni 100 percent Natural Cotton Striped Duvet Cover Set is a great pick that feels way more high-end than you'd expect at its price point. During testing, we found the cotton fabric to be very crisp and smooth to the touch. The duvet cover wasn’t overly soft or silky but didn’t feel scratchy or unpleasant either—just what you’d expect from plain-weave cotton.

It is also extremely breathable, which can be beneficial for those who tend to overheat while they sleep. The quality itself was impressive, as the duvet cover was sturdy and had a medium weight to it. The duvet cover had four corner ties and a two-way zipper closure that was well attached and slid with ease.

Post-wash, we found that other than some shrinkage—which tends to be standard for cotton bedding—there were no visible imperfections and zero signs of wear. We were impressed with just how few wrinkles remained on the duvet cover after following the care instructions. However, if you’re looking for a duvet cover in a classic, solid colorway, you might be disappointed.

While the Jellymoni Duvet Cover Set is available in 28 different pattern options, they do not offer any solid colors. Overall, the quality of this duvet cover rivals that of more high-end options, and we think that this is a great pick regardless of whether or not you’re on a budget.

How It Performed Long-Term

After six months of testing the Jellymoni Duvet Cover, we found that we liked the cover more with time. While we initially weren't the biggest fans of the stiffer texture of the material, it relaxed and grew softer with use. It wasn't the most cooling option we've tried, but it didn't get overly hot throughout the night, either. The comforter inside mostly stayed put, and we didn’t have to make ongoing adjustments apart from the occasional shake. Additionally, we appreciated the zipper closure. If you’re willing to wait a bit longer for the ideal amount of softness, we think this is a worthy pick.

What We Like
  • Soft long-staple cotton

  • High-quality, long-lasting construction

  • Sturdy with a medium weight

What We Don’t Like
  • Button rather than zipper closure

For those who are willing to spend a little extra money on their bedding, the Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Duvet is well worth it. Made with organic long-staple cotton, we were immediately blown away by just how smooth and buttery-soft the duvet cover felt. It also felt sturdy while not overly heavy, which is a good indication of the duvet cover’s durability.

Its construction was also very high-quality, as the buttons and corner ties were easy to find and use. We also appreciated that the buttons aren’t visible since the cover has a tucked-in flap that hides them. The duvet cover draped beautifully on the bed and looked very clean, especially with the hidden buttons.

Upon arrival, we did notice a few minor loose threads around the button holes, but there were no other visible imperfections. Post-wash, the duvet cover did shrink a bit but still had plenty of room to fit the duvet. Additionally, the initial lustrous finish dulled a bit, but this didn’t affect the texture negatively. Other than that, the duvet cover held up very nicely with no signs of wear. So while the Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Duvet is an investment, we think its luxurious texture and thoughtful construction are properly reflected in the price tag.

How It Performed Long-Term

We can’t recommend this product enough, especially after long-term testing. Six months of use and multiple rounds of washing later, we didn't have any complaints about this product, and it continued to impress us night after night. We found the ties to be impressively substantial, and they hung onto the corner loops very securely. There were no signs of wear or degradation in quality, and the duvet cover still looked as good at six months as it did when it arrived.

How do you keep duvet covers in place?

Quality duvet covers should have internal corner ties that can be secured to the loops on your duvet insert. Some duvet covers may have four ties (one in each corner), while others may have up to eight (with extra ties at the middle of each side of the duvet cover as well). These should help prevent your duvet insert from bunching up inside its cover, but it's also recommended to regularly fluff your duvet when making the bed. Just lift it and give it a few quick shakes to even things out. Duvet covers have buttons, a long zipper, or more fabric ties along one side as closures. Buttons or ties can feel a little tedious, but they tend to last longer than zippers do.

Best known for their crisp texture, quality construction, and substantial longevity, hotel-style bedding can add a touch of luxury to your bedtime routine. The Slumber Cloud Essential Duvet Cover is made with a cotton-viscose blend and boasts a 300 thread count for the ultimate home-away-from-home comfort. In our testing, the fabric felt very soft, light, and smooth, without being overly silky or glossy. This duvet cover would be a great pick for year-round use since it provides the perfect balance of warmth and breathability.

While this duvet cover is pretty standard in terms of design quality, it performed as promised. There were no signs of pilling, snagging, or fading when we first inspected the duvet cover. While the duvet cover was comfortably larger than the insert, it still fit nicely enough and didn’t look sloppy on the bed. Additionally, the button closure and ties were easy to use, and slipping the cover over the comforter proved to be very easy. Post-wash, the duvet cover held up exceptionally well with minimal shrinkage and no signs of wear. However, we did notice a bit of wrinkling after washing and drying.

How It Performed Long-Term

After two months of consistent use, we were happy to report that this duvet cover held up exceptionally well. The texture, softness, and quality of this duvet cover make it well worth the money, based on our experience. The cotton-viscose blend felt buttery-smooth and cool to the touch, making it luxurious to sleep under.

What We Don’t Like
  • Limited color options

When it comes to getting a luxuriously cozy night’s sleep, nothing quite beats the buttery-soft texture, wrinkle-resistance, and lustrous finish that sateen bedding offers. The best of the bunch is the Brooklinen Luxe Duvet Cover, which is made with long-staple cotton and boasts a thread count of 480.

During our tests, we were impressed with just how crisp and smooth to the touch the duvet cover felt. There were no visible imperfections upon arrival, and the buttons seemed well attached. The overall quality was impressive and the button closure and corner ties made for a smooth process. When placed on the bed, we also found that compared to other options we tested, this one was the least wrinkled and gave the bed a polished look.

After following the care instructions, we noticed the Brooklinen Luxe Duvet Cover did suffer some shrinkage but still fit the comforter perfectly. Additionally, the fabric’s texture seemed even softer post-wash. In general, there were no signs of wear evident and it held up nicely. This duvet cover is only available in four color and pattern options, which don’t leave much room for customization but should still match well with the majority of design styles. This duvet cover isn’t cheap, but at under $200, we think its quality is seriously impressive and will last you for years to come.

How It Performed Long-Term

Overall, we’re impressed with how well this cover performed over six months of at-home testing. We loved the duvet cover’s smooth and airy texture, which made sleeping underneath it exceptionally comfortable. We did notice that the material is prone to wrinkles after multiple nights of sleep, so we wouldn’t recommend it to those who prefer super-smooth bedding, and we did have to adjust the duvet insert a few times due to some bunching. But after a quick fluff, the duvet looked as good as new. Additionally, we were impressed with how well this duvet cover repelled pet hair, which was helpful when testing it in a household with two pets. It held up nicely over time, with no visible signs of wear or changes to its texture.

  • Clean look and snug fit

What We Don’t Like
  • Not as soft as other options

  • More prone to wrinkles

Partial to the crispness of cotton percale bedding? The Parachute Percale Duvet Cover is your best bet for a high-quality pick since it’s made with always-dependable long-staple Egyptian cotton. The texture of the duvet cover may not be as glossy or soft as other options we tested, but percale tends to be firmer and smoother than other types of weaves. Because of the fabric’s breathability and lightweight feel, this bedding is ideal for summertime (or year-round use if you tend to overheat).

We were impressed with the overall quality of the duvet cover, as all of the seams and buttons were in good condition with no visible imperfections. The buttons were all intact and the stitching held them securely. The Parachute Percale Duvet Cover fit nicely around the comforter we used during testing and looked clean when draped on the bed. However, we did notice a bit more wrinkles compared to the other options we tested, so this may be something to consider if you’re planning on purchasing this duvet cover. Post-wash, we saw a few loose threads around the button holes, but nothing especially concerning. There were no other signs of wear and the fabric maintained its quality after multiple washes.

How It Performed Long-Term

Crisp, cool, and snug, this duvet cover is perfect for those who prefer the look and feel of percale bedding. At the six-month mark, we observed no major changes in the texture or visible signs of wear to this duvet cover. Throughout the testing period, the insert generally stayed in place as soon as we put the cover on. While we did enjoy the texture in general, we have found that it could be too cool for some people’s tastes, as it didn't trap very much warmth throughout the night. But if you tend to overheat or prefer to swap out your heavier bedding as temperatures rise, it is a great option to consider. Additionally, we found that, like many other types of percale bedding, the material is especially prone to wrinkles.

What We Don’t Like
  • Zipper gets caught easily

  • Cover may be a bit too big

For those who prefer bamboo over cotton, the Hotel Sheets Direct 100% Bamboo Duvet Cover 3-Piece Set is our favorite of the bunch. The fabric, which is made from bamboo-derived viscose, has a texture that’s both buttery-soft and silky-smooth. The duvet cover has a very lightweight feel that’s less crisp and structured than traditional cotton. If you tend to overheat easily, this duvet cover is definitely for you—the Hotel Sheets cover is moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating, and very breathable.

The duvet cover didn’t have any visible imperfections upon arrival, and the stitching seemed to be neat. We found that the zipper gets caught in the fabric easily unless you’re pulling it taut. Otherwise, the zipper closure was smooth and easy to use. This cover also comes with additional ties in the middle as well as the corners for added security. Unfortunately, it was borderline too big for the comforter we used, but it only looked noticeable upon stretching out the corners.

Post-wash, we found the duvet cover looked a bit more worn in, but the actual texture remained as good as new. However, this cover was a bit more wrinkly than many of the other options we tested. In addition to the duvet cover itself, this set includes two pillow shams (or just one if you purchase a twin or twin XL size).

What We Don’t Like
  • Prone to wrinkles

  • Duvet insert sometimes visible between buttons

If you tend to overheat at night, you may want to opt for a lightweight and breathable duvet cover like this one from The Company Store. It’s made with a blend of bamboo rayon and cotton, which makes for a smooth and incredibly soft texture. We noted in our testing that the fabric itself felt sturdy and somewhat heavy while holding it. However, the material was surprisingly breathable and felt deceivingly lightweight while lying underneath it. Upon arrival, there were no imperfections and the duvet cover seemed very well-made. The button closure was very secure, and the corner ties prevented the comforter from shifting and bunching.

Post-wash, there were no signs of wear; other than some slight shrinkage, the duvet cover seemed as good as new. The buttons remained intact and the seams and hems looked great. We noticed there were quite a few wrinkles after washing and drying, so if this bothers you, you may need to consider the extra step of ironing them out before making the bed. Additionally, you can purchase a matching comforter, sheet set, shams, and pillowcases separately.

How It Performed Long-Term

For those who prefer lightweight, cooling bedding, we highly recommend this duvet cover from The Company Store. After two months of testing, we loved how luxurious and temperature-regulating the duvet cover felt. We also appreciated how secure the ties were, as they did a great job of keeping the insert in place. We think that adding more buttons on the closure could help conceal the insert, but this is a minor design flaw considering the overall quality of the product.

What We Don’t Like
  • Likely too warm for all-season use

Heavier bedding is usually a good choice for the chilly winter months, and the Bedsure Cotton Duvet Cover Set provides the perfect amount of thickness and sturdiness without being overly stuffy. Compared to other options we tested, this cotton duvet cover has a weightier, almost flannel-like texture. It’s made with a waffle weave, which is ideal for colder climates since the textured surface can help trap more heat. The material felt very soft and cozy, but not overly smooth or silky like some of the other options we tested.

Upon arrival, the duvet cover felt very high-quality, as all seams were straight and secure with very few loose threads. The buttons were securely sewn on and there were eight inside corner ties, so you’ll never have to worry about bunching or shifting. The duvet cover fit perfectly around the comforter and added a sophisticated and understated texture to the bed.

Post-wash, there were no signs of wear, and the cover held up nicely. We suspected that because of the textured surface, the Bedsure Cotton Duvet Cover Set would be more prone to snagging compared to duvet covers with a smoother surface, but we didn’t notice any additional loose threads after washing and drying. We were surprised that considering its low price, this duvet cover performed wonderfully, boasting impressive durability and quality construction.

What We Don’t Like
  • Prone to wrinkles

The Buffy Linen Duvet Cover is made with 100 percent hemp, which absorbs more CO2 than trees and promotes biodiversity in the ecosystem. But just because it’s more sustainable than other materials doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice comfort. This duvet cover is soft, pliable, and has a lived-in feel that makes it even cozier. There is a bit more texture on the surface of this cover compared to other options we tested, but we didn’t think this detracted from the overall comfort level.

This duvet cover is also on the heavier and sturdier side, but it still feels airy and breathable. The overall construction proved to be very high-quality, as the fabric felt durable, and the overlock stitching on the seams was well done. There were no imperfections found in the dye and pattern.

The duvet cover fit nicely around the comforter and we were impressed with the overall look of the bed. We loved how the duvet cover was both sustainable and charming, in part because of the casual, textured surface. The duvet cover also featured an envelope closure to conceal the corozo nut buttons, which were well-attached and easy to use.

Post-wash, we didn’t notice any signs of wear, but even if we did, the textured surface would do a good job of minimizing their appearance. While there were a few wrinkles evident, we didn’t find their appearance to be too detectable due to the material.

How It Performed Long-Term

Ideal for restless sleepers, we loved how well the Buffy Linen Duvet Cover has stayed in place throughout its two-month testing period. The cover remained securely around the insert with virtually no need for any adjustments. Plus, the cover’s hemp material helped it from sliding off the bed at night, even with lots of tossing and turning. We did notice that the material was prone to wrinkles, but this tends to be standard for hemp and linen bedding in general. So if you love a lived-in look, we think this duvet cover is a great pick.

If you’re looking for a duvet cover you don’t have to swap out with the seasons, consider the L.L. Bean Pima Cotton Percale Comforter Cover. It has some slight heft but isn’t overly thick or heavy. The duvet cover is made from soft Supima cotton, among the highest-quality cotton you can buy. In our testing, we liked that the texture of this fabric felt softer and smoother than most of the other cotton duvet covers we tested. The smooth percale weave ensures the duvet cover never feels overly hot, which is one of the reasons we think this product would be great for year-round use.

The duvet cover’s quality was immediately evident with flawless stitching, medium weight, and well-fastened buttons. After making the bed, the insert remained securely in the duvet cover, without any shifting. While not overly heavy, the substantial construction of the duvet cover helps prevent the insert from moving around much at all, which is a pro if you find yourself having to readjust your duvet frequently.

We were disappointed that an oil stain spread after spot treatment and laundering, and foundation also didn’t come off the cover either. However, oil and foundation were persistent stains across the board, as oil-based stains are generally difficult to remove regardless of fabric. That being said, the cotton proved to be quite durable, with virtually no fibers coming off after rubbing the fabric with sandpaper. The duvet cover remained virtually unchanged besides some slight color fading in the abraded area.

The fabric had a soft, smooth, and buttery finish, providing a luxurious texture we couldn’t get enough of. It also felt quite cool to the touch, which makes the cover a great pick for hot sleepers. While the fabric warmed up a bit after lying underneath it, the lightweight construction felt comfortable and not overly stifling.

The duvet cover itself had neat stitching, secure corner ties, and completely hid the insert from sight. After making the bed, we noticed that the duvet cover was slightly oversized and provided a bit of excess fabric. After shaking the duvet, we found that the insert shifted slightly, even though it remained securely attached at the corners and the closure remained buttoned. This may be because of its generous size, so be sure to measure your insert before purchasing a duvet cover.

The Eucalypso Heavenly Duvet Cover cover held up pretty well to our abrasion test, but only performed about average during the stain test. So while we’re not worried about how the material will stand up to pet claws and consistent use, you may want to take caution if you live in a mess-prone household or often wear heavy skincare products to bed.

What We Like
  • Warm and cozy construction

  • Highly durable

  • Gets softer with every wash

What We Don’t Like
  • Slightly wrinkly

While an exceptionally cozy duvet cover may make it a bit harder to get out of bed each morning, we think it’s worth it. Made from long-staple cotton, the Riley Percale Duvet Cover stood out to us during our lab tests in terms of texture. It earned a perfect score in this category, and according to the manufacturer, the sheet set should get softer with each wash. The percale weave gives it a crisp and smooth texture, while the combed cotton adds a bit of warmth.

While making the bed with this duvet cover, we loved how it fit over the insert, completely hiding it once the cover was buttoned up. The insert did not budge at all, even when shaking the duvet.

Post-wash, the fabric held up well with no loose threads, pilling, or snags. The material proved to be quite durable, as the abraded area showed absolutely no signs of wear. Both oil and coffee stains came out completely, and a foundation stain was still visible but had faded quite a bit. We also noticed that this duvet cover came out of the wash a bit wrinkly. Overall, we had very minimal complaints about this high-quality duvet cover, and we think it’s a great pick for anyone who loves ultra-soft bedding.

Final Verdict

Of all the options we tested, the Bare Home Duvet Cover earns our best overall title because of its impressively soft and smooth texture, quality construction, and thoughtful design. For something a little more wallet-friendly, we highly recommend the Jellymoni 100% Natural Cotton Striped Duvet Cover Set, our best budget pick, a value-packed bundle with a crisp and cool texture, sturdy zipper closure, and lots of unique color options.

How We Tested the Duvet Covers

After researching the most beloved, top-rated duvet covers currently on the market, we gathered 56 options and put them to the test in The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa. We evaluated them based on quality by inspecting the duvet covers both before and after following the care instructions. We looked for any loose threads, pilling, snags, and imperfections in the stitching, dye, or pattern. We also noted the duvet covers’ material, weave, and hand feel.

Next, we assessed the texture of each duvet cover, considering its weight, thickness, breathability, softness, structure, and smoothness. At this point, we placed each cover over a comforter, observing the ease of application, how snugly the cover fit, whether there was shifting or bunching, and how it draped over the bed. We also paid special attention to the ease and quality of closure and whether the insert was fully concealed inside the cover.

The Spruce Team Finds the Best Duvet Covers

To evaluate the durability of each duvet cover, we performed a spill test and poured coffee, foundation, and oil over each cover, noting how easy the stains were to remove. We then abraded the fabric with sandpaper, observing any changes in quality and if any fibers came off. We also carefully followed care instructions and judged whether or not there were any signs of wear, imperfections, wrinkles, or shrinkage post-wash. Finally, we assessed the duvet covers’ value by comparing the retail price with their overall quality.

We also conducted at-home testing in addition to our lab testing to see how each duvet cover held up in our own homes. We checked in after the six-month mark for most products, noting our experiences after using the duvet cover night after night. We considered how well the inserts stayed in place throughout the night, how the cover held up after multiple washes, and whether or not the texture or quality changed over time. We analyzed our test scores and insights along with our supplemental research to compile this list of duvet covers we believe are the best.

What to Look for in a Duvet Cover

Material and Weave

Duvet covers are made from a variety of materials. Cotton options like the Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Duvet Set (best splurge) are naturally durable, breathable, and easy to care for. High-quality cotton variations include Supima, Egyptian, and Turkish cotton. These types of cotton typically have long-staple fibers, which offer more durability and a softer feel than standard cotton. Our best all-season pick, the L.L. Bean Pima Cotton Percale Comforter Cover, is made from Supima cotton and feels exceptionally soft and smooth to the touch.

If you’re opting for a cotton cover, you’ll also want to pay attention to the type of weave. A percale weave will give you a cool, crisp feel; we especially like the Parachute Percale Duvet Cover (our best cotton pick). Sateen weaves, on the other hand, offer a silky drape and subtle sheen if you're looking for a five-star finish—our favorite of the bunch is the Brooklinen Luxury Sateen Duvet Cover (best sateen).

Bamboo duvet covers, like the Hotel Sheets Direct Bamboo Duvet Cover Set (best bamboo), tend to be exceptionally soft and temperature-regulating. The same goes for eucalyptus duvet covers, like the Eucalypso Heavenly Duvet Cover (best eucalyptus).

In this story, we also recommend a linen-like option: the Buffy Linen Duvet Cover (best hemp). Hemp is known for its durability and textured surface. Similar to linen, which is made from flax, hemp can also start out quite rough and get softer in time. While hemp tends to be quite wrinkly, many people are fans of its casual and relaxed look, which matches well with a number of decor styles, including modern farmhouse, bohemian-style, and French country styles.

There are also microfiber options, such as our best overall pick, the Bare Home Duvet Cover. Microfiber is a synthetic material that offers a soft and comfortable texture at a more affordable price point. The texture of microfiber can vary greatly depending on construction quality, but the fabric is usually low-maintenance and affordable.

Note that cotton and linen are both known for being prone to wrinkling, but Saana Baker, a textile expert, says: "Linen or printed cotton [duvets] will be OK without ironing, especially if you smooth them before drying them and remove from the dryer while still damp."

Thread Count

You should also consider thread count, but keep in mind that it's only one of the many factors that contribute to a fabric’s overall quality. Quality duvet covers made from long-staple cotton may have a lower thread count than other options, but the quality of the cotton itself provides extra softness, breathability, and durability.

For example, while the L.L. Bean Pima Cotton Percale Comforter Cover (our best all-season pick) has a moderately low thread count of 280, it’s made with Supima cotton and beat out many of its higher thread count competitors thanks to its softness and longevity.

In contrast, our best overall pick, the Bare Home Duvet Cover, has a thread count of 1800, since it’s made from microfiber. Microfiber bedding tends to have a higher thread count compared to other materials since the fibers are much finer, so more can fit into one square inch of fabric. Both options performed very well during our tests, despite having vastly different thread counts.

Size

To find the best fit for your duvet, Baker suggests measuring your duvet insert and paying attention to any cover's dimensions: "The dimensions don't have to be exact, but they should be close," she explains. "Ideally, the duvet cover should be an inch or two smaller than the duvet itself, so everything is nicely stuffed."

Additionally, you’ll want to double-check before you buy any “in-between” sizes, such as full/queen or queen/king as seen in our best eucalyptus pick, the Eucalypso Heavenly Duvet Cover. If you have a full-sized duvet insert but purchase a full/queen sized duvet cover, you may find that the cover is a bit too oversized, which can lead to shifting and bunching. Our best bamboo pick, the Hotel Sheets Direct Bamboo Duvet Cover Set, comes in six exact sizes, ranging from twin to California king.

Closure

Wrestling your large, fluffy comforter into a duvet cover requires skill and determination—and keeping it inside requires ties, buttons, or a zipper. "I prefer a zipper or buttons that are well-concealed," says Baker. "You don't want to see the duvet hanging out of the bottom of the cover."

While many duvet covers rely on button closures, a zipper closure will save you the time and tediousness of securing each button. Our best overall pick, the Bare Home Duvet Cover, has a zipper to make closing it a breeze. Keep your closure preferences in mind if you'd like to minimize your time spent making the bed.

Some people like the traditional styling of a buttoned duvet rather than a zippered cover. Some buttoned duvet covers have an extra flap of fabric to conceal the buttons themselves, like the Buffy Linen Duvet Cover (best hemp). Other covers are designed to leave the buttons exposed as decorative accents. However, button closures can also make attaching the duvet to the insert a bit more tedious and time consuming. Plus, they are more prone to coming undone after a night of tossing and turning compared to zipper closures, which tend to be more secure.

Fabric ties are a less common option for closing off the open end of a duvet cover, but they can help give your overall bedscape a relaxed, breezy look.

Care Instructions

One of the main reasons to use a duvet cover is to avoid washing your comforter frequently, especially if it’s goose or duck down-filled and requires special laundering. "Go for a washable duvet cover unless you are comfortable with dry clean only," advises Baker. Pay attention to the care instructions to see if your chosen duvet cover is machine washable and dryer safe.

Also, keep in mind that certain fabrics, like cotton, will get softer over time—that was the case for the Jellymoni Duvet Cover (our best budget pick). So even if your new duvet cover seems a little stiff at first, it's worth washing it to see if it softens up.

Additionally, many manufacturers recommend removing the cover from the dryer when it's still a bit damp, and then letting it air dry while spread out on your bed. This can be especially helpful for more wrinkle-prone fabrics, such as percale cotton or linen. If that process adds too much time to your laundry day schedule, a handheld garment steamer can help soften wrinkles once your duvet cover is fully machine-dried and back in place.
