We Tested the Best Indoor-Outdoor Rugs for Versatile Decorating

Transform your outdoor space with these indoor-outdoor rugs

Best indoor-outdoor rugs displayed stacked on top of one another in sunlight

The Spruce / Dena Burreson

An indoor-outdoor rug is a versatile accent piece, adding style to any area of your home. When shopping for a rug of this kind, experts recommend considering its style, material, durability, and size.

“You'll want it to be around the same proportions as an indoor rug, where the furniture pieces help anchor the rug usually to create a whole seating set," says landscape designer Amber Freda. "I tend to use outdoor rugs most commonly under sofas and sectionals, because it feels like creating an outdoor living room."

With these factors in mind, we put some of the top indoor-outdoor rugs to the test, measuring their overall quality, durability, ease of care and cleaning, and value.

What We Like
  • Comes in various sizes and colors

  • Stain-, fade-, and mildew-resistant

  • Easy to clean

  • Feels like an indoor rug

What We Don't Like
  • No warranty

  • Pricey

Soft, stylish, and durable, the Dash & Albery Geometric Diamond Indoor/Outdoor Rug is easily one of our favorite picks on the market. The flatweave rug features a bold diamond-print pattern that’s sure to catch your eye, and it comes in three neutral colors and several rectangular sizes to suit your space. We were immediately impressed by just how surprisingly soft this rug was. Even without a rug pad, the rug felt very cushiony underfoot.

After weeks of home testing, we found this rug to follow through on virtually all of its claims. It's handwoven from polypropylene fabric—which, unlike many natural fibers, repels rather than absorbs dirt, water, and other substances. As such, it's also resistant to stains, fading, and mildew, so you won't have to stress about leaving it out on a rainy day. The rug is also super-easy to clean: for smaller messes, simply spray it off with a hose. More persistent signs of wear and tear necessitate going in with an all-purpose cleaner and scrubber brush, which will make the rug look good as new in no time.

What We Don't Like

  • Not as soft to walk on

With its versatile design and high-quality construction, Ruggable's Border Braid Sand Re-Jute Rug checks a lot of our boxes. Made with Re-Jute—a jute alternative made with recycled plastic bottles— it maintains the casual look of jute without any shedding or scratchiness. And while this rug definitely provided enough padding to cushion from rocks and other sharp objects, its texture wasn't the softest. However, because of the weather-resistant materials used to make the product, this wasn't a dealbreaker for us.

This floor covering also features Ruggable’s unique two-piece design: a non-slip base, as well as a removable cover that can be machine-washed for convenient cleaning. It's available in two neutral shades—Antique Oak and Sand, which is the color we tested—along with several sizes and shapes, making it ideal for all sorts of spaces, even hallways! Plus, the material is water- and mildew-resistant, so you won't have to worry about leaving it out year-round.

What We Don't Like
  • Not as durable as some other options

The Fab Habitat Cancun Reversible Rug comes in several vibrant colorways—including bright shades of green, blue, and red—and its striped pattern is sure to make any outdoor space feel lively and fun. This affordable rug is made from recycled plastic, making it an eco-friendly choice, and it’s UV-resistant to prevent fading if it’s displayed in the sun.

The Cancun Reversible Rug comes with a carrier bag in case you want to bring the rug on a picnic or to the beach, and the durable construction can simply be hosed off if it ever gets dirty. However, because the product is so lightweight, it might not be as durable against the elements, compared to some of the thicker and heavier options we've tried.

What We Like
  • Comes in various sizes and colors

  • Durable

  • Feels soft under feet

What We Don't Like
  • Doesn't dry quickly

The sea glass-inspired pattern on the Waverly Indoor/Outdoor Rug is perfect for any space with a beachy or coastal vibe. It sports an abstract print with pretty shades of blue and green swirling throughout (there’s also an additional color option featuring shades of purple), and the floor covering is made from a durable polyester material that can be hosed down for cleaning yet still feels soft and welcoming underneath your toes. Its medium pile and tight weave resist dirt and debris while offering a significant amount of cushion.

We also love that the rug is easy to roll up and can be easily transported from location to location. Just note that this indoor-outdoor rug doesn’t dry as quickly as others, so it’s better suited for a partially covered outdoor area, such as a porch or gazebo. If it gets wet, though, it will eventually dry and maintain its high-quality look—you'll just have to wait several days for it to do so.

  • Lots of colors and sizes to choose from

  • High-quality construction

  • Good value

  • Contemporary style

What We Don't Like
  • Not as quickly drying as the brand claims

  • Prone to fraying and snagging

Available in ten colors and a variety of sizes, the Safavieh Courtyard Indoor/Outdoor Rug has a simple appearance that lends itself well to just about any space. With a subtle checkboard pattern, it’s ideal if you’re looking for an understated floor covering that won’t draw too much attention. The polyester-polypropylene material is both water- and stain-resistant, with a soft feel underfoot.

During testing, we were most impressed with the rug's high-quality construction: unlike some other options, it didn't shed or have any loose threads, and it stayed firmly gripped to the ground throughout use. (Note that we used it with a rug pad, which the brand recommends.)

Unfortunately, this rug isn't quite as quickly drying as the brand promises—after hosing it down with water and leaving it out to dry overnight, it was still pretty soaked. This makes it better suited for dryer or lower-traffic areas; you might not want to put it next to a pool. And while the product definitely cleaned up easily, its fine threading can be especially prone to snagging and fraying. All in all, though, this is a great option that comes in at a very reasonable price point.

When you flip the rug over, you’ll get the same pattern but with the colors reversed—not a huge difference, but ideal if you happen to stain or snag one of the sides.

This rug has a bohemian style and is crafted with recycled plastic that’s weather- and stain-resistant, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. It's also very soft and lightweight: during testing, we found it incredibly easy to unroll and use, and it felt a lot more comfortable than some of the other options we tried. Just note that when it comes time for cleaning, this rug can only be spot-treated—harsher scrubbing or hosing could lead to damage, which we don't recommend.

If you're looking to make a statement, check out the Rifle Paper Co. Cream Monstera Rug. With a lush monstera print, this floor covering will serve as the perfect backdrop to your seating area—whether indoors or out. Designed in collaboration with Loloi Rugs, this rug is made with both style and durability in mind. First, it's power-loomed in Turkey from polyester, and then treated to be both UV- and mildew-resistant.

During testing, we found the rug to have a soft and smooth feel that cleaned easily and stood up to wear. To clean it, simply sweep or vacuum the rug; for heavier messes, you can hose it down and leave out to dry. However, because it isn't water-resistant, we wouldn't recommend leaving this rug out in the rain or near a pool. We also love how easily this rug rolls up, making it portable if you want to carry it from place to place.

You’ll be sure to get tons of compliments on the Jaipur Living Indoor/Outdoor Rug, which features a bold geometric print that is surprisingly versatile. Available in three sizes, the polypropylene material is durable and easy to clean. During testing, any debris was easy to sweep off, and our feet felt cushioned when walking over rocks and other sharp objects. It has a non-skid backing that will stay in place throughout use—no slipping or bunching here.

However, we wouldn't call this rug "stain-resistant": during testing, the BBQ sauce and grape juice that we spilled on it were challenging to remove, and you can only spot-treat this rug. (The company doesn't recommend scrubbing or hosing it down.) Still, this is a solid overall option that's stylish, affordable, and fairly durable.

How We Tested

After researching the most beloved, top-rated indoor-outdoor rugs currently on the market, we gathered 31 options and put them to the test in The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa. Our testers evaluated them on the basis of quality by inspecting each rug upon arrival. We laid the rugs flat on the ground, noting whether they had any loose fibers, frays, or snags. We also noted the color and design quality and whether they had any extra features like loops or fasteners to make moving them more convenient. We then assessed the rugs' texture by comparing how they felt while walking on them barefoot and how much cushion they provided after placing some rocks underneath. To rate them on their durability, we dragged a patio chair and a large potted plant from one side of the rug to another and saw whether there were any snags, tears, or other signs of wear afterward. To test for ease of cleaning, we followed care instructions after getting dirt, potato chips, mulch, barbecue sauce, and grapefruit on the rug. Using a broom, vacuum, and soft-bristled brush to remove the stains, we observed whether treating the spots resulted in damage to the rug fibers. If the rugs were labeled as waterproof or water-resistant, we tested for those properties as well. Finally, we evaluated value by comparing the retail price with their overall quality.

In addition to our standard in-lab testing, we conducted long-term home testing in order to see how the rugs held up over time, checking in after one month and three months. For long-term testing, we took the 12 lab-tested indoor-outdoor rugs and sent them to our volunteer testers' houses to note how they performed in real-world situations. We asked our home testers not only to consider the quality, texture, durability, ease of cleaning, and value of each, but also to note how it has enhanced, if at all, their day-to-day lives. Testers also considered how the product has held up over time, their favorite and least favorite things about it, and whether or not they'd recommend it to a friend. We analyzed our testers’ scores and insights along with our supplemental research to compile this list of the best indoor-outdoor rugs.

What to Look for in an Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Material

Indoor/outdoor rugs are typically made with synthetic materials like nylon, polyester, and polypropylene. That ensures they won’t get moldy or soggy when exposed to the elements and will dry off quickly. Bamboo rugs are also used outdoors, but they fare better in covered areas.

When it comes to material, you'll also want to keep the thickness in mind. "I really like the thin plastic or woven rugs because they drain well, dry really quickly, and often come in a multitude of color options," says says landscape designer Amber Freda. "They are also very easy to clean and less prone to staining than thicker outdoor rugs."

Size

As when buying any rug, you’ll want to consider the size and shape that best fits your space. You can find indoor/outdoor rugs that are square, circular, and rectangular—and in a wide range of sizes. If you’re planning to move the rug indoors during the winter, make sure it will fit comfortably in both your indoor and outdoor spaces.

Style

Just because you’re buying an indoor-outdoor rug, that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style. From simple, solid-colored options to more bold patterned rugs, there are lots to choose from for your space. Make sure to take the space where you're planning the rug into consideration, though. If it's a porch or patio that gets direct sunlight, make sure that the rug you're buying has been treated to resist UV rays. Those in wetter climates will want to get an indoor/outdoor rug that's equipped to handle the elements, keeping absorbency and durability in mind.

FAQ
  • Where would I put an indoor-outdoor rug?

Indoor-outdoor rugs are an easy way to help pull a space together. They can be used to define or separate areas of your home, patio, or larger rooms that could use more dimension. They're especially helpful in spaces like studio apartments to help carve out and separate a bedroom space from the rest of the house. You can also use your rug as a focal point for your living room or another outdoor area to give it more balance.

In terms of places to avoid, Freda recommends steering clear of mess-prone areas (for example, near plants or dining areas). "I’m generally not a fan of having outdoor rugs go under planters because of the staining that is likely to happen from dirt coming out the drainage holes," she says. "[M]ake sure you measure ahead of time and get the correct-size rug for the space."

  • Can an indoor-outdoor rug be placed on any surface?

Although indoor-outdoor rugs are durable and versatile, you'll want to take into consideration the type of surface you intend to place one on. In general, indoor-outdoor rugs are designed to be used on hard and flat surfaces, such as concrete, tile, or wood. You may run into trouble trying to place one on a softer surface, such as grass or sand.

If you want to place your indoor-outdoor rug in an area that has an uneven surface, like brick or stones, you'll want to do your best to ensure the surface is as level as possible to avoid creating a tripping hazard. If you want to even out the surface a bit while keeping your rug in place, you can try using a rug pad with some cushioning. In general, look into the reviews and manufacturer recommendations to see which surfaces your indoor-outdoor rugs are designed to be used on.

  • How do you clean an indoor-outdoor rug?

Indoor-outdoor rugs don't require a lot of maintenance, most can simply be hosed down on both sides and cleaned with mild dish soap if there are stains. Since most indoor-outdoor rugs are made of synthetic fibers, they're typically easier to clean because the material won't get damaged by water.

For tougher, dark stains, you'll want to spot clean your rug with club soda to help neutralize the stain. After blotting out the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel, you can then wash it with mild dish soap and warm water before hosing it down completely on both sides. Allow it to air-dry thoroughly before placing it back in your home if using it indoors.

  • Can an indoor-outdoor rug get moldy?

Indoor-outdoor rugs are made of materials that are resistant to the elements. They're designed to dry quickly and resist moisture. Although that may be the case, it's still a good idea to clean your rug regularly, and you'll want to also vacuum your rug regularly to remove any large dirt and debris.
