Before You Buy a Bedskirt
Bedskirts are designed to hide a bed's boxspring. However, they also offer a way to bring more color, pattern, and style to your room. Choose from tailored or ruffled styles that match or contrast with your room's decor. Here are some other factors to consider when buying a bedskirt.

Size and Drop
Know your mattress size (length and width) as well as the "drop" measurement -- the distance from the floor to the top of the box spring, which will determine the length of the skirt. Most bedskirts have a "standard drop" of about 15", but there are some stores and online sources that sell deeper drops for higher beds. If your drop measurement is not standard you may need to have a bedskirt custom made to your bed's exact measurements.

Color
Plain color bedskirts may offer the most versatility for decorating. However, a bedskirt is another great place to repeat or contrast other fabrics in the room. Watch out for light colors in very thin fabrics that may allow the ticking of your box spring to show through. If you want a light colored bedskirt, then better quality fabrics such as matelasse, cotton chintz, chenille, or even velvet, and will have a tight enough weave and a thick enough threads that "see through" won't be a problem.

Fabrics
Many bedding manufacturers offer bedskirts in matching patterns for their sheets and comforters. If none are available from the manufacturer then some retailers offer custom sewing where regular sheets can be made into matching bedskirts. In any case, beware of very cheap fabrics being used for bedskirts. Less expensive brands may use more open weave, muslin-like fabrics that may look unsatisfactory.

Finishing Touch
Whatever bedskirt you choose, be sure to bring it home and try it on your bed for fit and color. If it's just right then take a few minutes to iron the bedskirt all the way around. In less than 15 minutes the wrinkles will be gone and will be ready to be "installed" on your bed.
