Question: I am moving into a new apartment with ugly aqua bathroom tile. I can't change it, so what can I use in the room to tone down that tile?
Answer: Your question is a common one, and there are several things to consider.
First, it will help a lot to create a focal point in the room other than the tile. This could be a colorful shower curtain, art on the wall, accessories placed on the sink, or even a piece of furniture (such as a chest) if the room has any extra space. You may be able to find an inexpensive border wallpaper to bring the eye up to the ceiling, or hang some interesting objects around the mirror. The focal point will catch the eye so the tile appears more in the background.
As for a color scheme, there are many ways to go, depending on your preference and the actual color on the tile. You might do a tropical theme with aqua and bright green towels, or go with an elegant camel or tan.
You'll need to pick up whatever towel color(s) you decide on, plus hopefully even a small touch of the aqua, in some fabric (curtains), some patterned towels, or even some art prints on the walls. Then it will look thought out, instead of haphazard.
Since you don't plan to be in this apartment for a long time, be sure to think about what you might be able to use later that would still will fit in with the tile right now.
If you can, inquire whether you might be able to Paint the Tile a neutral white.
