Question: Our family moves frequently. Do you have any advice for versatile decorating?

Answer: There are several things to remember for anyone who moves a lot. Avoid selecting anything too big -- such as gigantic L-shaped sofas or six foot long dressers. Even if it fits in your current home, the space in your next house is likely to be different. Next, you'll want to select furniture that will be adaptable to new spaces.

For example, see the article on the many uses for a chest of drawers, a versatile piece of furniture that can work in many rooms. Other adaptable pieces are matching bookcases or storage units that can either be used together or separated to work in various rooms.

Also, work on a comprehensive color scheme and use coordinating fabrics. This will allow you to more easily move items from room to room and still have them look like they belong. Finally, spend your money on what you can take with you every time you move - furniture, area rugs, pillows, tablecloths and no-sew curtain panels, rather than on expensive cabinetry, built-ins, or custom drapery that won't move with you.

Finally, if you are on the lookout for storage solutions as you move, you may be interested in the ideas in "Storage Solutions for Living Areas".
