Question: I have three framed floral art prints hanging in my dining room. When I bought them they were very colorful, however they appear to be fading and look washed out. Help!

Answer: Posters and prints will fade over time. Some colors, especially reds and blues, are more susceptible to fading and are called "fugitive" colors. However, you can take some precautions to minimize light damage.

First, ask your framing store about using UV glass and acid-free materials whenever you frame anything. Second, avoid placing any art in direct sunlight, and limit exposure to excess light by closing curtains and blinds during the brightest times of the day. If possible, place your favorite or most valuable prints in north facing rooms, or on walls that are naturally shielded from direct sunlight.

If your prints are fairly inexpensive, you might consider purchasing 2 identical (or similar) prints for each frame and replace a faded print later if necessary. Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the color that is gone, so if it bothers you, take your prints to a frame store or search online for suitable replacements. (Don't forget to update your frame's glass with new UV glass.)

Thanks for your question and good luck!
