Have you ever wondered how to get better information from the Internet? When you're looking for a specific term, try the Search Box located near the top of every page on About.com.
If you need more results, try a search engine like Google. Look for an "Advanced Search" page to learn more about searching the Net. The Tips listed below will help you get the most from your search.
Search Tips
Search with one word or two?
If you search for a single word (such as decorating) the search results may be too general. In that case, try adding another word or two to narrow your search, such as: decorating bedrooms.
Search with correct spelling
A word won't be found unless it is spelled correctly. Check the spelling or use a partial word with a wildcard (see below). Searching for the misspelled word stencel won't show any results, so try searching for stenc* instead.
Search with partial words and a Wildcard
Search with a wildcard -- an asterisk (*) -- to stand in for any string of
letters. For instance a search for decor* will find pages with words such as: decorating, decorative, decor, decorator, and so on. A search for window* will find pages with words such as: windows, window blinds, windowcoverings, window treatments, etc.
Qualify a search
To narrow your search even further, try separating search words with appropriate qualifiers such as AND,
NOT, OR. For example: kitchen AND countertops, furniture NOT contemporary, faux OR sponging
To search for an exact group of words
To find only those pages where the precise phrase "hardwood flooring"
occurs, enter the phrase in quotation marks "hardwood flooring". It doesn't matter whether you use capital letters or small letters. Also try logical variations such as "hardwood floors", "wood flooring", or , "bamboo floor".
