Part 2: Projects and Instructions

Beginners might want to start small. My first project was the drawer front of a small chest of drawers. Other than the time it took to center the design and decide on placement, the actual stenciling was completed in about 10 minutes. This small project still gets compliments.

There are several places on the net to learn stencil techniques. Most stencil websites offer instructions and tips on various projects and paint techniques.

Hometime TV's website includes a guide to stenciling, as does the Designer Stencils site with six step-by-step how-to photos, plus a scrapbook of rooms showing various stencil projects.

Stencil designs can be painted onto a wide variety of household objects including wood floors, walls, ceilings, cabinet doors, furniture, fabrics, paper, accessories, and more. The surface must be properly prepared for each application, the correct paints used, and then sealed as required. Find detailed instructions in stencil books or on stencil websites.

You may like it so much you can't stop. No wonder one of the online stencil sites is called The Mad Stencilist!
