Part 2: Pieces for home and garden

Rustic is great for outdoor spaces as well. Arbors, benches, trellis pieces, and chairs, look terrific surrounded by plants and gardens.

Wouldn't a wonderful rustic log bench look more interesting than typical metal and glass patio furniture? Which would add more charm to your backyard?

Traditional formal designs can even be recreated in a rustic style. The unusual and beautiful willow canopy bed shown here, would feel at home in both contemporary and country interiors, thanks to its pleasing Chippendale style lattice work and clean lines.

The room pictured is visually appealing, even without additional color or patterned fabrics, thanks to the charm of rustic furniture .

Porches, country kitchens, casual dining rooms, or covered patios might be just the right spot for a rustic dining table. It could be the perfect backdrop for everything from a family meal to a holiday celebration.

Picture a cozy rustic Christmas dinner table set with a simple basket of evergreens in the center, a Fourth of July picnic, or a backyard BBQ. You and your guests will feel right at home with rustic furniture.

Henry Fiser, owner of Wild Wood Furniture, recommends oiling wood pieces periodically. "Oil will nourish wood and will penetrate deep inside and keep the fibers of the wood supple, and it will make any material, especially wood, waterproof.

"Once a year I'd advise cleaning the piece, then applying oil generously. After a few days the oil will be absorbed by the wood. Any excess can be buffed in by a light rubbing with a cotton rag to make your piece look 10 years younger. Treating wood this way will help keep it for many, many years, looking always more beautiful."

He should know, since he's been making rustic furniture for over 15 years and his pieces have been purchased by some of Hollywood's biggest names.

Fortunately you don't have to live in Hollywood, or in a mountain cabin to enjoy rustic furnishings. They'll bring a homey flavor, charm, and appeal to interiors in city apartments and country homes alike.
