Part 2: Reasons to do it yourself.

Do the words "do it yourself" give you a kick?

Do you love the compliments people give your home and enjoy telling them that you decorated it all by yourself? Then you may not need or want the services of a professional designer.

Take a look at these guidelines to help you decide if you can indeed do it yourself.

  • You might want to "do it yourself" if...

  • You love decorating your home all by yourself.

  • You have enough free time to coordinate and shop for home decor items.

  • You know how to research and compare products and materials on the Internet, and go shopping armed with questions and information.

You're very creative and have more ideas than you can do for your home.

  • You don't have much of a budget allocated to furnishings, and usually just purchase things hit or miss, but somehow it all works.

  • You generally always find things you like -- fabrics, flooring, and furniture -- in your local stores or on the Internet.

  • Your home is basically fine and doesn't need any specialized lighting, a new kitchen, or major bathroom renovations.

  • You read enough decorating magazines and browse home centers enough so you know what new products, fabrics, and appliances are available.

  • You already have a a cohesive color scheme that you love.

  • You always have your eye on your next purchase, and are ready to buy as soon as you're able.

  • You just moved to a new house and now you can't wait to spend every weekend looking for furnishings.

  • You're perfectly content to choose your own favorite things and don't want a decorator, or anyone else, telling you what to buy.

  • You have a spouse or other resource who can serve as your most reliable furniture mover, installer, and handyman.

  • You have a file of magazine photos of rooms you like and can't wait to put together your favorite elements.

  • You don't mind dealing with the hassles of ordering, shipping, coordinating, and installing.

  • You and your partner generally agree on purchases for your home, or are flexible enough to make acceptable compromises.

  • You remain a confident shopper even when looking at a wall of paint chips, walking into a carpet store, or realizing that you've looked at 67 wallpaper books and still haven't found anything you like.

  • You trust only yourself to get it done right. Go To:
