Tips from Lowe's

Begin assessing your storage needs before you dismantle holiday displays (it's easier to pack lights and treasures into appropriate storage units than to re-pack them later).

First, examine where you store your holiday decorations. Damp basements require plastic bins to keep decorations and wrapping paper dry. See-through bins or totes in festive red and green colors make for easy identification, particularly in crowded storage areas. Cut costs by using corrugated boxes in spaces where moisture isn't a problem. "Extreme heat and cold won't harm most holiday decorations," Hillman said. "But moisture will." (Be sure to store keepsakes in temperature controlled areas, however, to avoid damage.)

Lowe's offers a myriad of innovative products to maximize your existing storage space. Among the most popular "must-have" items is the plastic tote. Lowe's has a wide selection of sizes ranging from 6 quarts to 50 gallons that can store items of all sizes.

Look for plastic totes specifically designed for storing holiday decorations:

  • "Wrap ‘n Craft" bins that hold six jumbo rolls of wrapping paper with room to spare. Flat wrapping paper bins slide under beds or sofas. Vertical bins hold tubes of paper upright. Some have a top compartment for tape, scissors and ribbons.
  • Ornament boxes have egg crate dividers that hold ornaments.
  • Light boxes include corrugated inserts or spools to wrap lights.

Lowe's Companies, Inc. is the world's second largest home improvement retailer with more than 850 stores in 45 states.
