More of our favorite kitchen helpersMore great organizing products for kitchens... Appliance Garage -- You'll probably need to order one of these from the manufacturer of your brand of kitchen cabinets. The garage can be placed in a corner or along a straight length of countertop. It generally fills in the entire area between the top cabinet and the countertop surface. An electrical outlet or two is handy to have inside the garage so that appliances can be kept plugged in and ready to use. Island -- Most kitchens with a floor area wider than 8 feet can accommodate a kitchen island. Look for ready-made models, have one custom made to your exact specifications, or make one yourself from stock cabinetry and a countertop. Be sure to allow 30-40" of walking space around an island so that appliances can be accessed easily. Open Basket Shelves -- Many kitchens now are being designed with a few open shelves outfitted with sturdy baskets for storage. A perfect place for potatoes, onions, or even cereal for the kids, these are a stylish solution and can be less expensive than another cabinet or drawer unit. Get this look in an existing kitchen by removing on cupboard door and rearranging the shelves to accommodate rectangular storage baskets of your choice, or add shelves to the end of a cabinet run or on an island. Chrome Rails and Pot Racks -- Many kitchen showrooms now are showing sleek contemporary chrome rails installed in the backsplash area under the upper run of cabinetry. Use these to hang kitchen utensils as well as specialized baskets and bins for condiments and oils. Pot racks are designed to hang from the ceiling or on a wall. Hang pots and pans from the racks using S-hooks. This is a convenient way to store often-used cookware, however many people find the racks somewhat distracting to the look of a kitchen.
