A perfect project for a young girl's room, this frilly lampshade cover adds color and romance. Difficulty: Average Time Required: Varies Here's How: - Obtain a lampshade that is narrow on the top and wider on the bottom.
- Measure the height of the shade as well as the bottom edge of the shade. Add four inches to the height. Add six to twelve inches to the bottom measurement.
- Cut out a rectangle of fabric to these measurements.
- Sew a one inch hem on both the top and bottom edges of the shade. Cover the bottom hem stitching, if desired, with a row of ribbon, braid, or trim.
- Sew up the short ends of the fabric, forming a cylinder.
- Run a row of gathering stitches about 1/2 inch under the top hemmed edge.
- Pull gathers in so the top of the gathers sit on the top edge of the lampshade. Secure gathering threads.
- Cut a length of ribbon about twice the circumference of the top of the shade. Secure the center of the ribbon to the seam of the fabric skirt.
- Set skirt onto lampshade.
- Gathers should sit on the top edge of the lampshade, with the one inch hem sitting above the shade.
- Secure the skirt in place with about four dabs of hot glue under the gathers around the top edge of the shade.
- Tie the ribbon around the shade into a bow. Clip ends neatly to desired length.
- If bow tends to slip then secure it with a few invisible stitches or tiny dabs of hot glue or fabric glue.
Tips: - Machine sewing may be faster, but hand sewing will work.
- Use fabric glue for hems and seams if you don't want to sew.
- The length of the fabric tube should be about one and one-half times the bottom circumference of the shade, and up to two times the circumference.
- This is a good project for lightweight sheeting and sheers.
