Lady's Office, Bath and Terrace

Designers Greg Parker and Dan White of Parker West Interiors transformed a nondescript space near the kitchen in the 2003 Pasadena House of Design into an elegant office, bath, and terrace for the lady of the house. Visitors to this space can view a repeating slide show that chronicles the project -- before, during, and after -- on a flat panel computer screen in the desk area.

The rooms were gutted for new plumbing and wiring, giving the designers an opportunity to raise the ceiling twelve inches for a more elegant look. "We consulted a structural engineer for safety reasons, but rebuilding the ceiling is not a difficult process in a one-story space," noted Greg Parker.

To minimize street noise and provide softness, the walls in the office were lightly padded and upholstered in a golden textured chenille velvet fabric. This luxurious treatment is also a nod to the home's 1920s history.

"We needed to work with the existing stucco color since it is visible through each window and surrounds the terrace," Parker explained, "so we chose a palette of golden, buff, and terra cotta hues. With such a limited palette, adding texture is extremely important, so hard flooring is balanced with upholstered walls, an area rug, soft lighting, metal, glass, an antique chest, and distressed wood."

This balance of materials and textures also serves to balance the masculine and feminine elements within the room, complimenting straight lines with curves. "Repetition of material has a calming effect," Parker said, "and our consistent use of flooring material, wood tones, and terra-cotta accents both inside and out underscores the feeling of serenity visitors feel in this space."

Hand-distressed cabinetry is embellished with touches of antiqued silver gilding applied to the beaded detail of the door panels, while a freestanding desk balances the straight lines of the cabinetry with a softer shape.

Column details from the front entry to the home grace the pedestal of the custom-designed sink. Terra-cotta colored stone from the sink has also been used throughout the space in flooring details. Over the sink a unique sliding mirror was mounted on a track over the window.

Interior floor tiles of acid-washed tumbled marble were also laid on the terrace, providing a unifying link between inside and out.
