Showhouse Report: Assistance League of Southern California Design House 2002 | |
An Italian Renaissance Mansion in Windsor Square/Hancock Park
The candy business must have been good in the 1920's for it allowed one local candy store owner, Walter M. Petitfils, to build a magnificent Italian Renaissance style mansion. This 9,000 square foot home sits gracefully on a corner lot in the Windsor Square/Hancock Park area, just a stone's throw from famed Wilshire Boulevard.

Chosen to host Design House 2002, the event benefits the nine services of Assistance League of Southern California. The home features an L-shaped layout, and includes a rotunda, ballroom, terrace, elevator, loggia, and separate guest house.
With only four bedrooms, the home could be comfortable for a family as well as a couple, yet it offers plenty of spacious first-floor rooms for entertaining. It is currently on the market in the five million dollar range.
Design House 2002 visitors can glean decorating ideas, ask questions, and view the exceptional work of designers and craftsmen, both in the original architectural details as well as in the newly applied finishes and furnishings.
The Design House 2002 is open through November 3rd, 2002. Here's a brief look at a few of the wonderful spaces in this mansion, followed by three pages of designer interviews and photographs.

Dining Room Kathryne Designs, Inc. Design House 2002 |
The Dining Room (Kathryne Designs, Inc.) -- Arched entrances and an intricately designed ceiling underscore the architectural sophistication of the home. In the center a rectangular Italian reproduction table dominates, yet there is ample room for built-in seating in one corner as well as sideboards and tables along other walls. The designer has turned the large area rug upside down to give it the look of a needlepoint design. Visitors will wish they were invited to be a guest at the table set for a grand fall dinner (see a placesetting photo below) using fine china, crystal, and silver.

The Kitchen and Butler's Pantry (Dolores Esparza) -- Outstanding architectural features have been preserved including beautiful ceilings and windows. New cabinets with crown molding are done in a light wood tone that compliments the color of the Venetian Plaster walls.
The Powder Room (Design Associates of Los Angeles) -- Worthy of a fine European hotel, the powder room radiates gracious elegance. Walls upholstered in silk, a gleaming chandelier, tall antique mirror, and a black marble countertop are just a few of the must-see elements in the room.

Faux Niche in Stairwell to Wine Cellar Gerald Sowell Interior Design Design House 2002 |
The Wine Cellar (Gerald Sowell Interior Design) -- These designers must have taken a look at the once small and dreary basement room and prayed for a magic wand. It's been transformed into an elegant wine tasting room with a pedestal table, upholstered seating, and decoratively painted walls that include faux windows looking out on a Tuscan landscape. Guy Chaddock furnishings complete the room, giving new meaning to a basement hideaway.
Chloe's Suite (Julie Trewhitt-Kays) -- Romantics everywhere will flock to see this beautiful bed and bath suite on the second floor of the mansion. Sophisticated fabrics and subtle wall motifs harmonize in a room designed for a young woman about to be married.

The Living Room Jill Kollmar Design Design House 2002 |
The Living Room (Jill Kollmar Design) -- A series of arched doors and windows give this living room a lyrical feel. The designer embellished an already stunning coffered ceiling by installing painted insets that mimic the look of detailed molding and plaster work. Beautiful upholstery, gorgeous window treatments, and twin chandeliers are just a few of the room's highlights.

Guest House (Carmen Quartararo) -- This space may deserve a medal for the sheer scope of the project, which was finished to perfection in an amazing six weeks. The designer completed a total makeover of the building's exterior, garden entrance, as well as five rooms inside the second floor guest house.

The Home Theatre (Ammie Kim Interior Design) -- It's no problem to dim the lights in this media space since it is located in a windowless space on the basement level. Upholstered walls and hidden speakers compliment the Art Deco furnishings done in chocolate brown, coffee, and cream.
The Gentleman's Lounge (Mark Cutler Design) -- Adjacent to the upper terrace, this small lounge sports leather chairs, deep colors, and exotic touches. The room's tiny closet has been made over into a remarkable little bar area with mirrored walls and dramatic lighting.
