Part 4: Why interior rearranging is so popular and practical

the Interior Arrangement and Design Association

Many people become overwhelmed when making decorating decisions coupled with the desire to make the correct, most cost effective solutions in home furnishings. The idea of hiring an interior designer to assist with these decisions may be intimidating, financially out of the question, or you may prefer your own decorating taste when deciding on elements to fill your home.

Some homeowners even dismiss the above entirely and spend thousands on redecorating without realizing that what they currently own may hold the key to a brand new decorating scheme.

Begin by discarding the notion that hiring an interior designer means everything must go and be replaced with expensive new furnishings. Joining the newest trends in home decorating is a unique and cost effective alternative, called Interior Arrangement, most commonly known as "Interior Makeovers". The problem is not in your personal taste or the choices you have made, it may simply be the arrangement.

We have all viewed the popular talk show when ordinary men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes are swept backstage with cosmeticians and fashion designers while the audience waits in anticipation of the extraordinary changes to be made in just a couple of hours. They return rejuvenated and gorgeous with their new image and look as if they now belong on the cover of GQ or Vogue. The audience applauds the results with ooohs and aahs.

The design concept of Interior Arrangement is very much like a personal makeover, working with what you have while adding some creative touches through a professional's trained eye and expertise, with one exception; the expert travels to your home- you don't even have to be there.

Living Room "Before"

Given a couple of hours, a professional interior arranger will work in your home and transform your interiors giving them a new and revitalized look simply by taking cues from the architecture while at the same time utilizing your existing home furnishings, art and accessories. Your interiors come alive and you rediscover the items you have selected to decorate your home. After the makeover is completed, suggestions for necessary items to enhance the room's décor may be made and assistance is given on zeroing in on those precise items, where to locate them and the proper placement once brought home.

Similar to our personal image, years of accumulating and collecting can leave a room in a rut and have it convey a tired and outdated look. Many homeowners then develop tunnel vision and can't see the potential of a room because after many years, they can't view their things objectively. Rather than starting from scratch, utilizing the interior arrangement design principles can make a dramatic change in a room's appeal.

Living Room "After"

The home makeover begins with the interior arranger removing the home furnishings from the room and starting with a blank slate. While focusing on the predominant architectural features, the furniture is placed in direct proportion to focal points such as fireplaces, a pleasing view or a display of art. Paying careful attention to the composition of balance weight and scale, changes like pulling the furniture into the room gives the illusion of space, and positioning seating that will interrupt common runway traffic patterns create the backdrop to a visually appealing interior.

Lighting is then addressed since often times major living spaces lack sufficient light. This is where the Interior Arrangement Designer will shop the home for items that will take on a new and different role or be used as a visual prop that gives the homeowner an idea of what is needed to enhance the room's décor. Art work and accessories are then brought back into the space with the designer's touch in creating interesting vignettes. Grouping or bridging related items is essential when adding emphasis to artwork display and tabletop accessories.

The concept works each and every time, leaving homeowners speechless on seeing what they once thought was drab become dramatic, in just one day.

"We've decorated quite a few homes so we know what works best. Right? Wrong! It was only when we trusted a professional interior arranger to descend upon our home, stayed out of their way and returned to find we had a new home that looked and functioned better then anything we had seen before. With a sensitivity to how the eye travels, the plan drew us to just where we wanted, the highlights and strengths of our beautiful home, with entertaining little side trips along the way that were inventive but not contrived. Several rooms that were 'just there' now invite us to relax, enjoy a book or share a cup of tea," commented Mr. and Mrs. Carson Beadle who recently had their home transformed by Judy Alto of "One Day Interior Makeovers."
