In this interview Rachel Ashwell discusses some of her unique decorating ideas, her tips for new decorators, and which fabrics she recommends for easy care slipcovers.

Q. Many people like the idea of updating their interiors for the seasons. What techniques do you use to transition your home from winter into spring/summer?

Rachel Ashwell: "Personally, I like white all year around, but if I didn't I would always have white for the summer months. I would change floral arrangements from season to season. If you have nice floors, wood or stone, perhaps remove winter rugs. If windows are pretty, remove any heavy drapes and replace them with summer sheers."

Q. What decorating ideas would you recommend to a homeowner who wants to rev up the look of a bedroom or living room for Spring?

Rachel Ashwell: "Shabby Chic is traditional and classic so you really don't have to revise the look."

Q. Many young mothers would love to have the washable slipcovers you've made famous. What fabrics are best for these?

Rachel Ashwell: "White denim is great when your children are young and as they get older you can change to white linen. White is always good as it can be bleached. Damask is great for tattered elegance but always pre-shrink all fabrics in warm water and a hot dryer. Overlock [edges of] fabric so it does not fray."

Q. What window treatments might you recommend for a Shabby Chic look -- and what are some treatments to avoid.

Rachel Ashwell: "Nothing too frilly. Roman shades are nice and sheers pinned to wall casually."
