About's Fashion Guide offers tipsQ.
How have you addressed storage for the kids?
Cynthia:
Both rooms have decent
closets, but because the boys have lots of clothes (hey, I am a fashion writer!), we had to add open storage, too. I bought two short shelves and put
the big toys on it for easy reach. One boy has a large toy chest, the other
drawers and shelves under a loft bed, too. And games and videos are all kept
in the game room for easy access. Toys that are kept in the bottom of the
closet are housed in clear plastic boxes so we can see what each one holds.
Q. How did you decorate their shared bathroom?
Cynthia: I chose to use an Americana theme (see photo below). We put up a red, white, and blue flag border, Ralph Lauren striped towels, a striped shower curtain, flag curtain rings, etc. It's cute and it should last a while because it's not too young looking.
Q.
What do your boys like best about their own rooms?
Cynthia:
The boys love that
they get to express their personality through their rooms! And they love
having their own space for their ever-growing collections (rocks, pennies,
cars, etc.)
Q. Did you buy furnishings and accessories online or in local stores?
Cynthia:
I originally bought the furnishings online, but
it was from one of those startups that ended up never shipping. I got my
money back and then went to a local retailer where I found essentially
the same pieces.
For active boys, I recommend finding a store that sells
sturdy wood furniture that doesn't cost a fortune. For bedding, I love Eddie
Bauer's denim line. Domestications.com has great bargains on bed-in-a-bag and
Target also has terrific accents and bedding. I find Pottery Barn Kids' catalog wonderful for inspiration, but I've sometimes found a similar look for less money
from other resources. If you'd like vintage items but don't have time to go antiquing, then eBay is a terrific resource.
