New Looks from Target and Waverly

Nov 30 2003

Waverly has long been known for beautiful floral fabrics and wallpapers, while Target is famous for quality merchandise at discount prices.

These two giants of merchandising have recently joined forces to create a new line of affordable, beautiful home products named "The Garden Room".

Each floral is matched with coordinating patterns, and is available in a wide variety of products for bed, bath, and kitchen, as well as a number of coordinated accessory items such as pillows, slipcovers, chair pads, wallpaper borders, stationery, dinnerware, and table linens.

Click here to learn more about using florals in decorating, including tips on color schemes and a lesson in some essential design principles.

To see more of Target and Waverly's new "Garden Room" collections, see these pages:

  • Sweet Violets collection includes a floral, a large plaid, small plaid, and a deep green damask.

  • Garden Lane features peach tulip clusters, matched to a colorful tulip petals print as well as a green and cream plaid.

  • Vintage Rose offers a tea stained rose floral, red and cream stripe, and a pretty tan and cream mini-check.

  • Roseberry pairs a pretty yellow, green, and red floral with a large floral plaid and a mini plaid.

Garden looks can bring a touch of sunshine and warmth to a room. Flowered looks have always been popular for their invigorating color and cheery designs. Can you imagine a cold winter day or a rainy summer day, as you sit in a beautiful leafy, flowered room, full of fresh spring color?

Although home decorators might be intimidated by working with a strong floral print, they can be one of the easiest color schemes to put together. Most patterns feature a range of shades and colors that coordinate easily with a variety of solids, mini-checks, plaids, and stripes.

Waverly has made decorating particularly simple since their fabrics and wallpapers are coordinated into mix and match groupings. This assists home decorators in achieving a designer-coordinated look without spending days or weeks searching for coordinating items.

If you'd love to have a garden room in your home, here are some tips on using strong floral patterns in interiors...

  • Look for florals that will coordinate with colors you may already be using in your home. With dark green carpeting, for example, a floral with pretty green leaves will fit in well. If you have tan carpeting or just prefer a more neutral look, some of the tea-stained designs may be perfect.

  • Balance strong patterns with liberal amounts of plain surfaces, on walls, floors, sheets, or curtains. Strong florals are beautiful and often a little can go a long way. Using plain backgrounds will give you flexibility in updating your accessories from time to time.

  • One way to construct your color scheme is to choose the background color of your floral for the paint color of the room.

  • Look carefully at the floral pattern to decide on the secondary and accent colors.

  • In general the secondary color will be a pleasing mid-tone that can be used for carpeting, bedskirts, pillows, upholstery, and trims. It might be a lovely green, rich camel, or a soft rose.

  • The third color is often a brighter accent color such as red. Use this color in smaller accessories, trims, and accents throughout the room... in pictures, vases, small boxes, welting, pillows, tie-backs, chair seats, and the like.

  • Use the design principle of repetition to balance the look. Repeat fabrics within the room so the patterns look evenly distributed. For example, if your bed is dressed in a pretty floral, add a floral runner on your dresser, a floral pillow to a plain chair, or perhaps some floral plates hung over the door.

  • Carry your floral theme into an adjacent bathroom. Repeat the floral in curtains, or pair floral towels with plain colors for a pleasing mix.

  • Use a few beautiful ribbons to underscore your floral theme. Tie a wide coordinating wired ribbon into a pretty bow and attach to drapery tie-backs. Slipcover a chair seat with floral fabric tied on with lengths of ribbon, or embellish pictures with a backdrop of wide plain ribbon streamers.
