Cheap Christmas Decorating Ideas

Decorating with Pinecones ImageI was out today drooling over some of the fabulous Christmas decorations that have been filling all of my favorite decorating haunts. Unfortunately, my wallet wasn't as impressed. As much as I would love to go out and buy all of the fab sparkling ornaments I love so much, it just isn't financially feasible.

Fortunately there are a lot of really inexpensive ways to decorate for Christmas. Some of my favorites include filling bowls with pinecones and adding some pieces of evergreen and berries, as well as filling glass vases with cranberries and adding a cream colored candle.  I've included a few more in this article about quick and easy Christmas decorating ideas. (I'll be adding more so keep checking back!)

What about you? What are your favorite ways to decorate for the holidays without spending a lot of money?

Last year Pottery Barn showcased a hurricane lantern with twine type garland inside. In between the brown twig-y garland and the glass were family photos. I went to Hobby Lobby and found a miniature faux fence made from twigs for a Christmas scene and an old vase…found some old photos and voila! Christmas decorations. I really enjoy your blog, thanks.

For many years my 3 boys and a bunch of friends had Christmas workshops to while away our long school break. We always made decorations. The obvious is paper chains made from saved, used Chirstmas wrapping paper, along with linked hand girls and boys to hang. But the specially delightful ones were home-baked cookies in Christmas shapes, with a hole for string, and these were decorated with silver balls, hundreds and thousands, vermicelli and icing. They looked wonderful on the tree. Another was meringues in Christmas shapes, or simply dollops andwiched together with melted chocolate, and decorated with silver balls, of course they were in all sorts of pastel colours, and also hung on the tree. Strings of popcorn look fantastic on the tree, and actually looks like snow! Half the Decorations were eaten before they ever got to the tree of course, part of the fun. Also lots had to be made so that the tree could be replennished as the tree had to be regularly raided to keep fresh! We also made Nativity scenes from scraps of fabric and empty toilet roll inners, painted and glittered ping pong balls, made pasta angels painted gold and silver. It was huge fun.
Our tree is still decorated in 80% of home-made decorations collected over the years, and I still bake for the tree. My youngest is now 22!

Thank you for all your wonderful ideas! Nature is such a great source for decorating through the year and I always start in my own garden. Every year I make an Easter twig with a branch from the witch hazel, I made spiders from chestnuts for Halloween, made a fall display with berries and beautiful coloured leaves and for the Christmas holidays there will be spray painted pinecones, holly leaves and berries and ivy, all from my garden. But I also pick up things during the long walks with my dog. Sometimes a beautiful shaped twig and some imagination does the trick. Another place for little treasures is the charity shop! I’ve found some really nice glass bowls that I fill with baubles or pinecones and a few battery tea lights. You really don’t need to spend a lot of money to get really unique decorations!
