There's one important thing that I think every home needs, and it's one that most decorators tend to ignore. A place to be messy.
Whether it's the corner of a den, a messy linen closet, or even a small junk drawer, as far as I'm concerned it's nice to have one place in the house that isn't always spotless. In my home I have a pretty wicker basket where I toss all my receipts, bills, loose papers and whatever else can fit in it. Once the pile gets so high that it starts to topple over I try to clean it out and file things away. It's not much, but in a strange way it's nice to have a place where I can just throw things and forget about them for a while.
I'm not suggesting that you should always be disorganized or get to the point where you qualify to be on Hoarders, but let's face it, none of us live inside of a magazine and trying to make our homes look like we do is an exercise in frustration. So do your best, but give yourself a break every now and then.

This is so very true. I have a place like this that I put my bills in until I have the time to go through them and pay them. They aren’t forgotten since I pay all my bills at the beginning of the month no matter when they are due. A place like this for the bills makes iteasier for me, and everyone who gets my mail knows that this is the place that the mail goes. It might look messy for a few weeks but it gets cleaned up when I file and pay my bills. Otherwise, I want my house to be spotless.
Thank you for posting this. I use to be so type-A about keeping my house looking uber-perfect, but I wouldn’t start any crafting or decorating projects because I didn’t want to deal with the mess. After advice from a friend, my husband and I sanctioned off a “work” space and I let it get as junky as I can stand. A little freedom from cleanliness helped me get creative again.
