Decorating Trends for Fall 2010

dark walls imageI'm always curious to know what's trendy in the world of interior decorating. While I tend to gravitate towards the classics I like to play around with trends just for fun when I can. While cruising the stores and the blogs looking for hot fall 2010 trends I came up with the following:

Fabrics and Wallpaper - Big, bold prints in rich, saturated colors. Examples include the Amy Butler collection for Graham & Brown and the Oscar de la Renta for Lee Jofa collection (it's technically a summer collection but I think it'll carry over).

Interiors - It looks like dark walls are the way to go. Sophisticated grays, indigos, pomegranates and dark figs are all over the place. I think the thing to remember with this trend is to go for chalky shades that have an air of sophistication rather than just dark colors. Check out a few photos from the Farrow & Ball Jo Malone Collection at Material Girls for a couple of nice color examples.

Style - If you like Baroque or Regency style decorating you're in luck. I'm seeing a lot of rich and bold patterns, curvy furniture and accessories and lots of fabrics piled on everything. Brass and mirrored furniture and accessories continue to be hot. It seems to be a response to the clean, spare looks we've been seeing over the past few years.

So to sum it up it looks like fall 2010 will be bold, indulgent and sophisticated. Just what I love!

I love some of these ideas. I’m a decorator in Milton Keynes which is in the UK and these arn’t trends I’ve seen. However I’ll be suggesting some of them to my customers as I really like them and think they will too. I particularly like the idea of chalky grays and dark figs. Great one!

Hi Tim,
So glad you like them! The dark chalky walls are definitely my favorite of the fall trends. There’s something really elegant, sophisticated and cozy about them. I hope your clients enjoy them too!
I’d be really curious to know if you see these trends happening in your part of the world as we get into fall. It’s always interesting to see how they translate across the globe. Check back in with us and let us know!
