When I meet with a new client, my first questions are about what they envision for their home. Often they have an idea but cannot really convey it to me well enough for me to bring the look to their space. So I ask them to start looking through decorating magazines and mark pages of pictures they like.
It's much easier for me as the decorator or even for the do-it-yourself home decorator to be able to identify what they want to do and then try to replicate the look with the resources available.
The easiest way to get ideas for decorating your own home is by seeing furniture arrangements in other settings, colors of paint on other walls, or window treatments on someone else's windows. For great sources of inspiration, you can read Decorating Magazines.
I love to visit a Decorator Showhouse where I can see the latest trends in an actual space.
If you're able to make a modest investment to your decorating library, pick up a good Book on Interior Decorating.
And when you have time to relax, check the local listings for Reality TV Design Shows. Before long, you'll be able to point to looks you like and start transforming your space to the room of your dreams.
